Shopping - Montreal

My sister and I (40+!) will be visiting Montreal at the end of the month. We will be staying on the West Island but will also spend a day in Montreal. Any suggestions as to unique shopping areas...not regular department stores etc. where we could go? We will have a car so we are flexible.

I'm without my Montreal maps and my memory is fading, so I need to be a bit vague here.

You want to be on a one-way street going north, north of Jean Talon, wihin a couple of blocks of St. Denis and St. Laurent, which are both north-south streets.

You are looking for several blocks of stores with a glass and metal canopy covering the sidewalk. Once you follow these lousy directions and find the canopies or awnings, you'll find lots of discount clothing stores, some interesting furniture shops, a really good camera store, a McDonald's with clean washrooms, and everything else a shopper needs.

St. Laurent, running north from Sherbrooke St., also has lots of interesting stores, some with very good prices on women's wear; some are more trendy.

BAK

Rue Laurier in Outremont, rue St-Denis north of Sherbrooke (a fabulous place to stroll, shop and enjoy the cafes), Westmont Square, and the underground - even though it's mostly similar to malls stateside, there are many unique stores - at some you'll see familiar stuff, but there are terrific "finds" at others. And, don't skip the "regular" department stores. Lots of terrific offerings. The new Simons on St-Catherine is fabulous.

Tell her to visit Ogilvy's on the corner of St-Catherine and Montagne. Spectacular windows at Christmastime. Beautiful inside as well. She may not buy anything there, but it's worth a look. Nice cafe in basement. She'd love the clothes at Simon's on St. Catherine. Just opened last Spring and would be just her style. Excellent shops between Montagne and downtown along St. Catherine.
