Seafood
Going to be in Halifax in Oct. have heard about a restaurant called the Lobster Supper, does anyone know if it's any good? Isn't there something about not eating lobster in a month with an 'r' in it?????
Any other good seafood places to suggest? Thanks. |
Born and raised in Dartmouth (across the harbuor) and never heard of this restaraunt. For great seafood, try McKelvies or the Five Fisherman. for the best lobster sandwich ($5.99 Cdn) drive over to Eastern Passage and head into the Fish Shack at the end of the Eastern Passage Boardwalk. A scenic area too.
PS - I eat lobster any month of the year! |
There are lobster suppers organized by church groups and others in Prince Edward Island. that may be what you are thinking of.
Lobster seasons, when it is legal to catch them, vary from loction to location in Atlantic Canada. In addition, lobsters keep well, alive, in facilities called lobster pounds, which are sometimes large tanks inside buildings, and sometimes submerged cages in salewater river mouths, sheltered bays, etc. therefore, it is always lobster season, by one definition or another, even if you can't go to the local wharf and buy directly from a lobsterman. Hi Byrana, I believe the restaurant you have heard about is located in Baddeck on Cape Breton Island. Its called The Lobster Supper. And as for not eating lobster in a month with r in it. Its an old myth you can eat lobster at anytime. Hope this clears everything up for you have fun...

THANK You all for your suggestions. Intend to get my fill of fresh seafood, hard to get here in Ontario. Hope to have time to get up to Cape Breton as well and visit Marion Bridge. Thanks again. |
Byrana: From what I remember, its oysters that you don't eat in months having an 'r' in them.
Brian: I've read so many of your posts, and want to thank you for sharing your vast knowledge of Toronto. We're coming from Michigan Thursday morning for the weekend and I'm really looking forward to seeing the sites and tasting some of the wonderful food of Toronto. |
There is a place called the Lobster Supper located on Grafton St. just across from the World Trade Centre. Check out John's Seafoods at Historic Properties food court. He serves up a wonderful lobster dinner that you can enjoy out on the deck. It is an up scale caferteria type facility. You can also purchase wine and micro brewery beer.
If you want to travel outside of the Halifax area, Hall's Harbour, just outside of Wolfville, is a great spot as well. You can pick your own lobster, they cook it up and you can eat it out on the picnic tables overlooking the water (just as lobster was meant to be eaten). Lobster season varies throughout the Nova Scotia shores, however, lobster pounds ensure that restaurants have fresh lobster for their menus. |
Bryana and Traveler Gina:
The "R" months are when it IS safe to eat oysters. You do not want raw oysters in warm weather -- May through August, the months without an "R". So enjoy lobster and oysters in October. |
