Salt Spring Isl. vs. Tofino
Considering a trip late Sept., early Oct. A few days in Vancouver and then 3 or 4 days on on the Island. Suggestions appreciated.
Considerations: 1. Outdoor secenry,activities-hiking,fishing,etc. 2. Weather that time of year(sun vs. rain) Thanks! |
Saltspring is something of a Garden Island-hobby farms and vacation homes abound-one nice seaside park and some hiking.
Smallmouth Bass in St. Mary Lake are plentiful but with drought conditions the lake will be warm/covered in green smelly algae (it was last September when I was there) and fishing will be slow. Saltwater around Saltspring is badly depleted generally. Tofino-all found-lovely beach/forest walks in the National Park~Kayaking~Fishing for Coho in the Ocean still possible-maybe even the mighty battling Chum Salmon if you're lucky. Fresh-local rivers will have little water and Salmon will be hard pressed-options are limited but some lakes will have Cutthroats on tap. Barring a dramatic turnaround expect cool cloudy mornings morphing into warm sunny afternoons. |
Sam - Thanks for the info. Am I more likely to have good weather(more sun, less rain) on Salt Spring than Tofino, or will it be about the same in late Sept./early Oct.?

Saltspring is generally your best bet for warm dry weather-however-with the drought we've been having all bets are off.
I know that last year at this time people were watering their plants with bottled water on Saltspring and going without showers for days at a time it was so dry-this year is worse. When I came back from my annual Saltspring Bass trip last September (usually taken early/mid June) I had to take a shower then a bath then another shower to wash the smell of the water on Saltspring off my skin. Tofino will be a mite cooler in the AM with a chance of fog but to me it's a more interesting place to visit because I cherish the outdoors so much. |
No matter what the weather, I'd pick Tofino any day.
