Sales Tax rebate
There was an article in the n.y. times stating a change in rules governing tax monies that are returned. It stated that Quebec Province no longer returns the tax one pays for hotels and clothing. It has been 2 years since my last visit . Is this true ?

This is a federal thing regarding GST as far as I know. I don't know if Quebec refunded their provincial sales tax or not.

Check out www.ccra.adrc.gc.ca for information regarding the refund of G.S.T. I don't believe the federal rules have changed.

Richard, I believe you are correct. I just received my rebate from our Montreal trip over the Thanksgiving Day weekend. The detachable portion of the cheque even had that printed on it (I guess they were getting a lot of enquiries about it).

Just came back from Quebec and there were signs at the duty free shop (which functions as an offical tax refund center) saying that Quebec bowed out of the tax refund program in November 2001. Federal tax is still refunded

yes,
thanx for your clarifying info. I don't want to sound nit-picky, but just so others know...we stopped at the Duty Free too (to pick up some yummy ice wines!). The "official tax refund centre" is run by a company that submits your rebate request for you on your behalf (i.e., it is not run by the government). They charge $7 for this service. I just sent it in myself.
