?s about Niagara Falls hotels

Hi - The husband and I are looking at doing a long weekend at a hotel overlooking the Falls for our 4th wedding anniversary (1st weekend of October 2003).
We're taken aback by some of the prices ($200-$400 range). Is that the norm? We're looking at the Sheraton on the Falls. Anybody stayed there and thoughts? What about other hotels you stayed at?
Thank you in advance.

We were looking to do the same thing for our anniversary when someone recommended we stay at Niagara-on-the-Lake, a quaint Victorian town about 15 minutes from the Falls.

Well, we did, last weekend, just got back, and it was the best recommendation we had. We spent one day at the Falls (which was enough), enjoying the attractions, and the remainder at NOTL at a B&B. Great restaurants, shopping, strolling, wineries, and views.

Hi caribtraveller:
That time of year isn't the high season. It tends to be still busy but it's not the high season. (the following weekend is our holiday)
Haven't stayed at that particular Sheraton but there is are so many new hotels in the city (not all are finished yet however) that I'm sure you can do better than 200-400.
Many hotels offer 2 night stay packages including some meals, accommodation, shuttle to casino etc.

When checking always ask for their best price, or packages etc. They don't always offer them.
The Hilton overlooking the falls has some fairly nice rooms in the range of $309.00CAD for two nights on package. (this included a jacuzzi suite, buffet breakfast for 2 both mornings, $75.00 off dinner in the Watermark restaurant.) (check out I think Niagarafallshilton.com) At this hotel to get a great view now because of all the construction you have to get a room on a very high floor. Most of their higher floor rooms have jacuzzi 2 person tubs which are rather nice for an anniversary weekend.
I'm sure you will get lots of suggestions from others here on the board.
Enjoy

Thank you both. We'll take a look at both your suggestions and go from there.

We live about 15 minutes from the Falls and have all our lives. Even though it's in our "back yard", we still go there often. So we have a pretty good idea of the area.

I couldn't agree more with Budman, stay in Niagara-on-the-Lake. It's a far better value, infintely "prettier", and no more than 15-20 minutes from the attractions at the Falls. Besides, the Falls will likely be cold in October and a lot of the offerings of the area are out of doors.

There are some nice resorts "on the Falls" (like the Sheraton, the Marriott), but you've seen the prices - they are basically tourist trap prices. Not worth it in my opinion. Think convention crowds, buses, casino goers, and the glitz and glamour of souvenir heaven, chain restaurants like Planet Hollywood and the Hard Rock. It's actually quite fun to spend a day or few at...but for my money, I would prefer accommodations that weren't in the "thick of it".

In addition, the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake has a ton of boutique shopping and other attractions like horse-drawn carriage rides and a very popular theater company "The Shaw Festival" in 3 venues - highlighting the works of George Bernard Shaw. There are also a number of great wineries in the region offering tours and tastings. NOTL is quite romantic and much more suitable for an anniversary.

Thank you all for your suggestions... we ended up booking the Hilton. NOTL sounds lovely but we're not in the mood for that atmosphere for this trip. We really want a bit of luxury (we did a top room with jacuzzi) and we want to see the falls from our window.
Can't wait!

I just read your posting and I think you made a great decision - my boyfriend and I stay at the Fallsviews a lot and it's beautiful, if your room is on the falls side you can feel the mist coming in through the window!
Have fun!
