Montreal is fabulous. I would recommend one of the beautiful boutique hotels in the old city area. There are often excellent deals on luxurylink.com

Quebec City is a piece of Paris in Canada.... I would check travel agents for either city and select a trip based on what attractions interest you...

Montreal has more shopping and more action, but for a romantic weekend I would definitely choose Quebec. It depends on what you like - Montreal can be romantic too, and there are great restaurants in both places, but I find Montreal more "north american with a French touch" than "parisian".

Definitely Quebec City

If you're looking for cosmopolitan flair, Montreal hands down.

Quebec City, while very picturesque and more traditionally romantic, is a lot smaller - great for 1 or 2 days, but isn't, my opinion, in the same league as Montreal in terms of dining, shopping and nightlife options.

Since you were originally going to Paris for such, you'd probably find Montreal more of an exciting destination. This is again, just my opinion.

However, if all you wanted to do was stroll around holding hands in a picturesque city, browse in gift shops and little boutiques, Quebec City's great... but with 3 days, I'd head to Montreal where the options always seem limitless.

Why not spend some time in both cities? They're only 3 hours apart by car.
If you're looking for more "action," then you should go to Montreal. However, if you're looking to just enjoy each other's presence, I'd suggest go to Quebec City.
Either way, they're both excellent cities for aweekend trip. I'm leaning toward Montreal, but then again I'm a proud Montrealer ;-)

Thank you all for the great comments! Decided to go with Montreal for 3 days! Will be staying at Le Petit Prince (B&B)in Old Montreal. Already have a reservation for the Sat night to Europea. Any comments on this restaurant? Also was thinking of leaving the day before check-in, to break-up the drive from NYC. Any recommendations on what is mid-way and where to stay? Albany? Further up? Etc..Thank you in advance.
