Hello caroltwin,
The "Trip Planning" page of my website about the Canadian Rockies addresses the question of when to visit the area and why: http://tinyurl.com/s4yaw Once you're at my website, you'll see a link to an Itineraries section where there are some sample itineraries to give you an idea of what you can accomplish in a given length of time. I also recommend the TIPS section, which has links to Canadian money, national park entry fees, weather, what to pack, driving distances and times, maps, other informative websites, etc. A similar body of information is being assembed at the TripAdvisor travel discussion forum, where they have invited contributors to collaborate in providing information, in the manner of Wikipedia. Here is TripAdvisor's Banff National Park's section (which, in the absence of a Canadian Rockies section, serves as a de facto Canadian Rockies section): http://tinyurl.com/h44hy Generally speaking, accommodation in the Canadian Rockies is expensive. You're looking at the C$180 / couple / night range for what in the Canadian Rockies is considered to be mid range accommodation. However, you can find clean and comfortable "home accommodations" in Jasper townsite for around C$80 / couple / night. Home accommodations are like a B&B, without the breakfast, but often with a kitchen. If you opt for motel-style accommodation in Canmore or Banff, you can find something for around C$110 / couple / night. Hope that helps. |
How long is your trip? Check out a map of Canada and you will have to choose east, central or west if you are thinking less than 14 days. If you like mountains Judy is right in assuming that west will be the way.

We had two weeks in and around the Rockies in May this year (Calgary, Edmondton, Jasper, Banff, Oysoosos, Hope, Vancouver). Weather was good, still lots of snow, and Lake Louise and some other lakes still frozen, so quite spectacular. Apart from one long weekend, we had no trouble getting accommodation without booking ahead.
We 'home-stayed' in Jasper for $C50 per night for two people. In other places we used motel accommodation (generally Super 8 or equivalent) paying about $C70 which usually included breakfast. Don't forget to claim your GST on accommodation etc when you return home - that's a piece of money to put towards your next holiday. |
Sorry, My response sounded kind of silly when I went back and looked at the title of your post! i must be more observant. Judy is definitely your lady if planning western travel.
