Road Trip 2007
 

Taking a road trip from Toronto to Vancouver, I am staying in Canada, not crossing the boarder and taking the Trans canada all the way through Calgary, Canmore, Revelstoke and on to Vancouver. Any tips, must see tours, cheap accomodations.... anyone have any maps they don't need anymore? any help would be much aprreciated :) This is my first road trip and I'm doing it SOLO.

if you are not a member of CAA, you should join now. Aside from the obvious benefits of their emergency road service (which could be handy on such a long trip), you can get free guides, maps and itineraries from them.

You can also get in touch with the various provincial tourism departments which will supply you a wealth of material, including up-to-date maps.

Old maps are good for historical interest, but I wouldn't count on them for practical purposes.

About 40km east of Thunder Bay is Ouimet Canyon Provincial Park. A nice short diversion from driving. Old Fort William just outside of Thunder Bay is worth at least half a day.

Just north of Winnipeg is Lower Fort Garry, an old fur trading post. More ideas forthcoming in another post.

Making the assumption that you are following the trans-Canada through Banff, make sure you allow time to drive the icefields highway. If you return to the trans-Canada and are adventuresome and willing to go out of your way for some history and scenery, from Revelstoke travel south and cross Arrow lake on the ferry at Shelter Bay. Continue on down to Nakusp, then southeast to New Denver and take 31A across to Kaslo. There is an old mining ghost town along this road that is a fun diversion. Spend a couple of hours soaking in the Ainsworth Hot Springs. Follow the highway to Nelson and back up to Nakusp, then head to Faquier to get the next ferry ride and head west to Vernon. Traffic will be fairly light on all this route but watch for logging trucks.

rm_mn, just wanted to thank you for your post...I'm doing the road trip Van to TO in August and am interested in seeing some interesting sites along the way. The mint sounds good!
