Road to Whistler closed for days
A large rockslide has closed the Sea to Sky highway north of Horseshoe Bay and south of Squamish. It will probably be closed for days, according to News 1130.

thanks for the information. Its the long way around I quess

Looks like quite a bad slide. Thank goodness no one was killed.
The bus driver is so lucky he stepped on the gas . Thanks for posting. |
On the news this morning they say the road will be closed for 5 days!!
Yikes for those who use it regularly. |
They better figure what they're going to do if this happens during the Olympics.
Thank goodness no one was killed. At-least they think no one is under there. Very scary. |
I just looked at some news service pictures of the slide. Those boulders are HUGE. The news article said that the side of the mountain above the slide had to be stabilized first. Then blasting to clear the boulders could begin. The indication in the article was that the work crews could shove the rocks over the side.
My guess is that time estimates are still iffy until actual road clearing begins. Perhaps we will know more by the end of tomorrow. http://tinyurl.com/6x7whs |
The latest report in the Vancouver Sun says that the The Sea to Sky Highway will remain closed until at least Monday for clearing and repaving.
Tons of rock are being pushed over the side into Howe Sound. The RMCP reports no trapped vehicles have been found so far. |
crankcase a big mt bike race starts next weekend It is an intrnational event.Brings in much income for the area.I sure hope if roads not clear, and fuel being so expensive it wont cancel this event.

The Vancouver Sun reports in today's edition that the road might reopen Sunday evening. That is optimistic thinking, but the report said that the road would be open even though it will need repairs to smooth the surface.

The Vancouver Sun reports that the Sea to Sky Highway is now open for travel.
It did not comment on the condition of the surface, but even a few bumps and jolts are better than a blocked highway. |
Some good plays on words are being posted on blogs concerning the reopening of the Sea to Sky Highway.
Some guy said that the cleanup was a concerted effort. The word play: With boulders the size of houses, that was some rock concert. As for the fact that crews worked all night, another comment was: We'll rock around the clock tonight. |
