Road conditions- BC/Vancouver Island

We will be traveling through Western Canada this summer (August), and have not been able to find out much about the roads. Forgive our naivete, but someone told us parts of the highway are gravel rather than paved, so we were wondering if the part we are going to travel on is this way. We will be going from Prince George to Stewart, then down to Prince Rupert. After taking the ferry to Port Hardy, we will be driving to Tofino. How are the roads? How often is there a gas station on the Prince George-Stewart stretch- my husband is worried that we will need to take extra gas with us. I am looking for websites or anyone's personal experiences. Thanks!

Stewart--now there's a blast from the past! The last time I drove to Stewart it was mostly gravel once you left The Yellowhead (the main Prince-to-Prince highway--Hwy 16. However, that was 20 years ago. So I just checked my highways map, and it lists the highway for most of the way being the same grade as Hwy 16. It's only the last 65 km that's "secondary highway," which may or may not be paved. (The rest of your trip is all on paved highway. Only one lane in each direction, but paved.)

As for gas, unless you're driving a monster RV, you'll be fine. It's only 220 km (136 miles) from where you leave highway 16 (Kitwanga) to Stewart, and I know there's gas at Meziadin Junction, about 150 km along.

p.s. When you're in Stewart, make sure you get "Hyderized." ;-)

Drove from Victoria to Tofino and then with the ferry to Powell River last week. The roads were great...all paved but some with only 2 lanes which may slow you down in August. Tofino... was great...huge waves and the pod of orcas beside our ferry was wonderful. Be sure to walk long beach and take in the wooden paths through the woods ... fantastic.
enjoy

Are you planning on travelling back to Vic from Port Hardy or travelling across the Island?

Sorry I was thinking of Port Renfrew. Ignore my above question.

Thanks for your helpful replies. We are used to two lane roads, so that is no big deal. Just glad to hear they're all paved- what a nasty rumor that was. To traveler, we're going from Port Hardy to Tofino to Victoria. Thanks again!
