restaurant rec -- short trip to Toronto
 

Dear all, I have a short business trip to Toronto this summer. Staying at the Park Hyatt. Any good recs for nearby (walking distance) restaurants? Preferably a good Japanese restaurant/sushi bar. Second choices: Vietnamese or a good brasserie or contemporary grill type place for a steak or grilled fish.

Asuka is a reasonably good Japanese restaurant just a block from your hotel. It's at 108 Yorkville, just a block east of Avenue Road.

There's a good (but pricey) seafood place called Joso's at Avenue Road and Davenport. www.josos.com

Other decent places nearby are Cantine (good for brunch, lunch or dinner), Le Select (French Bistro). La Societe in the Colonnade on Bloor is a pretty place with OK food. And your hotel has a Mortons in it. Fieramosca (www.fieramoscatoronto.com) on Prince Arthur (which is at the back of your hotel) is very nice and has a lovely backyard patio which is beautiful in the summer.

Just got this from my library and its full of suggestions. Skip the chain and go for unique.

A short stroll from the Park Hyatt is Jacques Bistro, a long time Yorkville restaurant, old school if that appeals to you. Dynasty is good for dim sum, Duke of York for pub grub and Over Easy a few doors from the Hyatt for breakfast.

Over Easy is the one I couldn't remember and I should have since my doctor is in that building.

Jacques is good -- nice omelets -- it's upstairs on Cumberland and easy to miss so keep an eye out for it.

If you are looking for a quick breakfast, we usually walk north on Avenue Rd to the Whole Foods café.

Thanks again! These are all good recs. Now it looks like the hotel might be changed to the Sheraton Toronto Center (maybe -- the final decision isn't up to me). I'll keep Asuka on my list but any recs for restaurants within walking distance of the Sheraton also appreciated :-)

Not walkable, but a short taxi ride away is Chiado, a Portuguese seafood restaurant serving pristine fish, much of it flown in directly from Portugal. Excellent preparations with an impressive wine cellar.

Ugh, the last stay we had at Sheraton Centre Toronto was a disaster. It may have just been a weekend thing, but it was full of kids having parties, including one right next door to us. I gave up on sleep around 4am and went down to the lobby to try to get some work done. I was shocked at the number of drunks that were meandering around. The worst was finding someone sleeping under the table I sat down to work at.

Well, happily, the hotel will not be the Sheraton. It will be the Marriott in Yorkville. I got the room confirmation today.
