Restaurant needed in Halifax

In about ten days, we are going to be in Halifax staying at the Ramada in Dartmount Halifax (I have no idea of where that is) and would like to know what the best restaurant around there is. We will be on a bus tour and have free time but no car. Can anyone help. Thank you.
P.S. Today is July lst.

Nettie, Dartmouth is the sister city to Halifax, and is connected by two bridges to the latter. It might be worth it to invest in a taxi to downtown Halifax - a Dartmouthian is going to kill me for saying this, but there are few good restaurants to be found in the vicinity of the Ramada. The Ramada is a pleasant enough hotel but not exactly in the thick of things.

I agree that Halifax has much more to offer (I live in Halifax) but Dartmouth does have a few good restaurants. Keystone Kelly's has a family atmosphere, a reasonably priced menu and is only 2 minutes from your hotel. A very good restaurant is Brewdabakers located on Windmill Rd - about 5 minutes from your hotel. They have their own brewery there on site. The restaurant is new and all non smoking. If you like authentic chinese food there is an amazing "hole in the wall" in the Shannon Plaza on Windmill Rd - the best chinese you'll ever eat. It's not really a hole - quite comfortable. It's about 5 minutes from your hotel. Also, there is an amazing steak and rib restauarant called Boomerangs on POrtland St. - about 7-8 minutes away - a little more expensive but the portions are HUGE and the ribs are the best I've ever had! Hope this helps!

Thanks to both of you. I should have said we were looking for a restaurant in Halifax either around upper or lower water street. I came across these three names in guidebooks:
daMaurizio-1496 Lower Water Street
MacAskill's-Dartmouth Ferry Building
Salty's-1869 Upper Water Street
Also, we were told that the Ramada has a shuttle service to Halifax.

Does anyone know anything about these restaurants? Thanks.

All good restaurants - upper scale and quite expensive. I'm sure you would enjoy any of the above.

I had a very memorable dinner at Salty's a couple of summers ago. My friend and I still talk about it. I had seafood pie (scallops, lobster, and fish in a cream sauce, baked into a flaky pie crust -- delicious) and, at the waitress' suggestion, garlic mashed potatoes that were the best I've ever had. My friend had some sort of scallop dish and hers was delicious also. The setting overlooking the water is very nice, the service was excellent, and the ambience was lovely and relaxing. We also thought it was a good value, but the exchange rate helped (we were visiting from Washington DC). If it is still as good as it was then, I would absolutely recommend it.

Hello again Nettie!

The restaurants you mention are all excellent - McKaskills overlooks the harbour on the Dartmouth side, and Salty's is right on the water on the Halifax side. You would be satisfied at any of those places, but I would like to add the following to your list, which are all excellent spots as well:

1. Upper Deck, in Privateers Wharf (Historic Properties), Lower Water St; 2. Waterfront Warehouse, Lower Water St; 3. La Cave, on Blowers St./Argyle - about 4 or 5 blocks up from the water; and 4. Ryan Duffy's - not on the waterfront, but if you're looking for a place on Spring Garden Rd., this is it; famous for steaks.

Enjoy Halifax!

Tim

Nettie:
I also agree that Salty's is not only outstanding food but the very best view on the Halifax waterfront. A truly pleasurable dining experience. We will be in Halifax in August and can't wait to have dinner at Salty's.

Couple more to add to your list:

1. Opa - a new Greek restaurant on Argyle street. Great food and a wonderful atmosphere. Sit in the courtyard and you'll think you are transported to a Greek taverna.

Harbourside Market - in Historic Properties this cafeteria style mix of various restaurants serve up some good grub. Try the seafood outlet! Plus you can sit outside right on the water. They also offer pasta's, grilled meats, wood-burning oven pizza, great sandwiches and lovely desserts.

In Dartmouth check out LaPerla serving northern Italian cuisine. Great food located on Alderney Drive opposite the ferry terminal.

All of the above are excellent restaurants! Too many choices! I'm sure you'll enjoy whatever you choose!

Thank you all, it is very much appreciated, now that halifax is settled, we also have a free night out in St. John, New Brunswick. We are staying at the Delta Hotel, which I understand is in a good location.
In every new place we like to eat in a really good restaurant and St. John is no exception but I haven't had any response to my posting. Do any of you nice people have any suggestion about St. John.
Thanks, Nettie
