Restaurant in Toronto Theater District
 

Can anyone recommend a good restaurant in the theater district in Toronto?. I would prefer to eat within a few blocks of the Princess of Wales theater on King St.

An alternative would be to eat near the Fairmont, on Front Street, where I will be staying, and then go to the theater.

When you walk fromt he Royal York, which is what we call the Fairmont, to the Princess of Wals, you can pass a dozen good restaurants, depending on your route.

So the real questions are what do you want to eat, and what's your budget like?

Out the front door, turn west on Front Street, and you'll be half a block from Bardi's, one of Toronto's classic steak houses (across from the side door of the hotel)

Keep walking west on Front Street and within two blocks you'll get to another steak house, two or three Italian Rrestaurants (I like Joe Badali's) and a Tex-Mex place that has great french fries.

Turn north along Sincoe Street past Roy Thomson Hall and you get to King, the street where the theatre is. Turn west again and there's four or five restaurants on the corner. Indian, Chinese, low-priced, high quality chicken, a New Orleans style place, a fake English pub with good food...

Keep walking and you pass a good Montreal-style deli for smoked meat sandwiches, and a good Greek restaurant. Then you pass a side street, Duncan, with several good restaurants in the first two block.

Keep going on King Street to the theatre, and there's another dozen good restaurants in the next block.

BAK's right -- the theatre district is chock full of restaurants. We particularly like Fred's Not Here and I've heard good things about the Kit Kat. But you'd really have to be more specific about what kind of food you're looking for and how much you want to spend. If you go to www.toronto.com and type 'restaurants in the theatre district' in the search box, you'll get a better idea. It's not the greatest search engine in the world but it's fairly helpful.

To be a little more specific, I am looking for a good restaurant that can be expensive but not over the top (main courses generally under $32 Canadian). As far as type of cuisine, just about anything but Asian is great.

We like St. Tropez Restaurant on King St., located right near Fred's Not Here and Kit Kat. They are very friendly and they get you in and out prior to the theatre. It is also a fun place to go back to after the theatre. If it is a nice evening, they have a little garden in the rear of the restaurant. We prefer the garden during the summer.

Try Acqua Ristorante at 10 Front in BCE place - it's a short hop from the Royal York and accessible from the Path network.

I don't know if you're still looking for an Asian restaurant in the theatre district but I was just there last night and noticed a place called Fortune Cookie. It's on the south side of King in the block west of John in a whole row of restaurants. I've never eaten there or even seen a review so I can't vouch for the food personally but maybe someone else on this thread knows it better.

The original message was about anything but Asian, but there are lots of other reders here, too, so Fortune Cookie might be of interest to them.

the good news about this block of restaurants is that they all have menus out front so you can see the choice and prices, and windows, so you can even look at the food if there are customers in the right place.

That's funny! I went back and re-read the original post and of course you're right. The way I'd read it was this (and this will show the importance of the comma): "...just about anything, but Asian is great."

I just went to Acqua before the U2 show last night, not having read Hogtownjim's suggestion until this morning. It was great. We sat outside, people watched and the food was delicious. Have the chocolate/orange creme brulee!!
