Restaurant Choices in Montreal
 

My girlfriend & I will be visting Montreal for the 1st time in early August & would love to get some restaurant recommendations for dinner. We will in town for 4 nights(staying at the Chateau Versailles) and are both fairly "adventuresome" eaters. We have done some research via the web & w/travel books but would love hearing about some 1st hand dining experiences. <BR> <BR>We tend to like the quieter, more romantic places where we can enjoy some great food with topnotch customer service. How about giving us your #1 place for French, Italian, <BR>Thai & Seafood in Montreal? THANKS in advance for any of your suggestions.

There are so many fabulous romantic restaurants in Montreal to choose from, it's really hard to narrow them down. <BR> <BR>I'll try. <BR> <BR>French--Toque is by every account creme de la creme. You will need reservations. <BR> <BR>Italian--my favorite is Modigliani's on rue Gilford in the Plateau Mont royal district...with sometimes superlative musical entertainment. Also good is Piccolo diAvolo in the gay Village. <BR> <BR>Thai--I like Chu Chai on rue St. Denis, but for somewhere with chi-chi ambience, try Bato Thai on rue Ste. Catherine E., near metro Beaudry. Both are reasonably priced in my opinion. <BR> <BR>Seafood--I haven't been anywhere in this genre that I would call romantic. <BR> <BR>I didn't even hit the tip of the iceberg, but these were the places that came to my mind. Enjoy Montreal; it's a great city. DAN

Don't forget Jewish!!! Montreal has the best Jewish Deli food in the world and specifically smoked meat at Swartz,s or, (second best), Ben's but even in the shopping centre food courts Montreal Smoked Meat sandwiches are better than you can get in most other places in the world. Don't confuse it with New York style Corned Meat and Pastrami. This is briscuit done so succulently it literally melts in your mouth. Indescribably artery cloggingly scrumptious. Also Snowdon Deli and Wolinsky's for other Jewish specialty's like blintses, knishes, latkas and kreplach. All these places are for lunch though and about as romantic as a MacDonald's but, trust me, your taste buds will love you for it!!! Oh yeah, the customer service - fahgit about it!!!

I like the charm of Schwartz's too Gary, but I think it's about polar opposite of what JZ id looking for :)

Yeah Dan, I guess so - but for lunch. For lunch I like to think the romantic inclinations are above the waist.

Many thanks to Dan & Gary for the quick replies to my request. We were looking for mostly dinner type rec's but I have to admit that Gary's description of the food at those Jewish delis made my mouth water (I didn't even reallize that Montreal was famous for this type of cuisine - your sandwich description reminds me of the wonderful "pulled pork" sandwiches that are so well known in some southern states in the USA) <BR> <BR>I believe that "Modigliani's" is not too far from where we are staying so we will probably check this place out for our Italian outing. <BR> <BR>On more request relative to dining in Montreal - How about a recommendation or 2 on the restaurant with the best view of the city? OK JZ now that I've piqued your interest read the 'Rants & Raves ' on Schwartz's & Ben's in the Montreal Deli section. <BR>As for best views, <BR>It's been a long time since I've been there but there used to be a fairly decent restaurant atop Place Ville Marie called Altitude 727. It wasn't bad but once was basically enough and I havn't paid attention to whether it's still there. The views of the city were great though.

Hi, if you want the best,best,best view of the City, do not MISS the roof-top (swivel) restaurant LE TOUR DE VILLE at Hotel Delta Centre-Ville located at 777 University Street in Downtown Montreal. <BR>It takes one-hour to view all around the city. <BR>The view is incredible and the meal (buffet style) is the best in town. <BR>IT IS A MUST. ENJOY.

We have been to Montreal many times, and have rarely been dissapointed in the restaurants. Here are some ideas: Duluth Street, which intersects St. Denis a few blocks above Sherbrook, has many interesting byob ethnic restaurants, and is a very popular area for the locals. Our favorites are Jardin des Panos (Greek, very popular, especially the terrace), Khybler Pass (Afghanistani), and Eduardo's (Italian). On Rue Rachael is a great small Spanish place, Casa Tapas. For something really exotic, try the Nil Bleu Etheopean restaurant on St. Denis right near Square St. Louis. A very nice downtown Italian place is Hosteria Romana on Metcalf (very quiet and romantic). There are two 'Le Commensal' vegetarian cafeterias, which offer a lot of very unusual dishes, a great lunch spot. One of the best French restuarants is hidden away on Rue Ontario East, and it's 'Au Petit Extra'. again, it's not a touristy spot, but very French. The cheapest lunch deal is a place like Amir's which is a fast food Middle Eastern chain. Great food, under $7 for two!

Our thanks to Joan & Doug for the additional restaurant suggestions. You guys have our tastebuds jumping already & we can't wait to get to beautiful Montreal (4 days to go!). The "spinning" rest. idea intrigued us and the places that Doug mentioned also sound good. They seem like restaurants that the locals enjoy, which is good enough for us. <BR>If any of you get to Chicago sometime we would be happy to share some good restaurant choices with you as well as other classic Chicago things to do.

I was reading your post to Foders about Montreal and all the responses you received. Would you mind telling me how your stay was and which restaurant's you tried. <BR> <BR>JZ, <BR>My husband and I leave this Friday the 17th for 2 nights in Montreal, 1 night in Kingston and 2 nights in Niagara Falls. This message is for Jackie since I too have just returned from Montreal and have been on the Fodors site and got advice about place to dine. I think I can help since I was at Niagara Falls in June and Montreal this past weekend. I would highly recommend the 21 Restaurant in the casino at Niagara Falls and the meal of a lifetime was enjoyed at the Beaver Club in Montreal at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel. Don't waste your time on Nuances since it was pricey and extremely overated. Hope this helps a bit.
