relocating N.S. - Edmonton
 

Thinking of moving to Edmonton from Nova Scotia,better job and new grandson!Looking at Leduc or Devon area,close to airport out of the city.Love to hear from any maritimers's who have made this familiar journey.Look forward to hearing from you,thanks. Steve

Steve, you might have received an answer earlier, but perhaps none of us wanted to say that the Leduc area is really pretty plain and boring and no-where, really.

If the rest of your family is there, well, that's an attraction. And if you are planning on flying a lot, the airport is convenient.

I used to be a maritimer a long time ago, and I have lived in Calgary and Edmonton, but I'm not a current transplanted maritimer, and perhaps there are lots of those in the area, and friendships and stories about down east will overpower the general blandness of the area.

Edmonton, itself, is a pretty good city, other than the lack of an ocean. Beautiful reiver valley, wide range of interesting things to do...

But, when all is said and done, being close to the baby is more important than the scenery.

You might want to consider how cold it gets, too. A friend of mine who is from Helsinki, Finland, lives in Edmonton. She complains that Edmonton is cold. Your car will need a headbolt heater and a plug in line.

It was 31C (88 F) in Edmonton today.
If you are from Nova Scotia you will love the climate in Edmonton - a beautiful long autumn, crisp sunny winters (not much snow in comparison to the east coast), and gorgeous sunny and hot summers (but it's a dry hot!!). Only spring is ugly.
The winters in Edmonton are calm enough that it has been decades since any winter weather has brought life to a standstill the way it regularly does on the east coast.
You may miss being close to the ocean, but the Rocky Mountains are only a 3 1/2 hour drive away (on a fast four lane divided highway).
But if you have a grandson in Edmonton, you already know all that.

i'd choose devon over leduc. it is pretty with the river close by. tons of maritime transplants there. i know they all love to go back and visit but non plan on leaving edmonton. when you get homesick, head over to a bar off of whyte avenue called the "trap & gill" and sing along with other maritimers.

well, hard to say considering that you are probably use to fabulous beaches. but, for lakes i think they are alright. pigeon, michalon (sp?), wabamum all have decent beaches especially for kids. sylvan lake has a great beach but it is very packed in the summer.
