Recommendation for restaurant near Hummingbird Centre
We are going to the Hummingbird Centre (227 Front, Toronto) and would like your recommendations for a good, not too pricy, restaurant nearby for pre-performance dinner.

One of my favourite Toronto restaurants is a Thai place called "Spring Rolls". There's a location fairly close to the Hummingbird Centre - its at 85 Front Street East. The food is delicious and the price is very reasonable (two mains, one pop, one beer, including tax and tip for about $30). Reservations highly recommended (416-365-7655).

www.springrollsonline.com

Couple of suggestions:

One block east along Front Street is Church Street - south on Church 1/2 block is Le Papillon
16 Church Toronto (416) 363-0838 - good bistro/crepes and steak frites is always good.

About 3 long blocks from the Hummingbird is an Italian Restaurant called Romagna Mia Osteria Pizzeria--106 Front E Toronto (416) 363-8370. Very good risotto and pasta dishes.

I would heartily endorse Romagna Mia. It is authentic Italian and a decent wine list. We told them we were headed to the theatre, and made a reservation for 6:00. Made it to MamaMia (8:00) in plenty of time.

Tonight my wife is eating a Fume, (Japanese) on Richmond near Duncan, about a 15 minute walk from the Hummingbird, before she walks over for the opera.

The Hot House Cafe, a block east of the Hummingbird at Front and Church is a fovorite of mine, for Italian food that's good, relaxerd, well-priced, easy to deal with, etc.

I used to eat there so often I had my own table. But it's not an "event" restaurant.

Le Papillion is an old favorite, but I was never full eating there.

Shopsy's, across the road, is a great place if you'd be happy with a smoked meat sandwich or other deli fare.

And if you want to have some fun, and control your own pace of eating, the Marche in BCE Place, on Yonge Street half a block north of the Hummingbird, is a weird kind of multi-food-station cafeterian where you go from food-prep area to food-prep area gathering together the elements of your meal. Salad here, bread there, main course somewhere else. Food is good, but prices can add up in a hurry. If medium to big kids are involved, this is a particularly good place.

BAK

CORRECTION TO MY POSTINGABOVE.

If you are looking for Japanese, it is FUNE, with an N, not Fume. Address is 100 Simcoe Street, at the corner of Richmond. That's one block closer to the theatre than I said above.

BAK
