Reasonablly priced accomodations in Niagara On the Lake on Montreal for July - 2 families
 

We are traveling to Canada for 2 weeks in July (busy time, I know!) and are still searching for reasonably-priced accomodations (B&B, Apartment rentals) for 4 adults and 4 kids (ages 8 - 12) in NOTL area and in Montreal. While we would love to be in-town in both places, we are completely flexible in NOTL -- we have two cars. None of us are huge box hotel fans, which might make this challenging. In Montreal, it would be wonderful to be somewhere either central or with easy access to bike paths or public transportation. I have emailed the McGill University folks for big budget housing but looking for other ideas as well. Prefer to stay below $175/night. Any help is greatly appreciated! Merci :-)

Under $175 per night per family or for all 8 of you?

Short term apartment rentals are a grey area legally in Montreal, but you can try vrbo. However, Montreal has many b&b's. My preferred area to stay in a b&b is the Plateau area, which is the northeast corner of the downtown. A nice b&b will run you around $125 a night per couple. You might be able to get 2 kids in that same room. One advantage to this part of the city is that free on street parking is usally available. The major bike routes in this part of the city are Rue Rachael, Parc LaFontaine, and Cherrier. There are many b&b's on or within a few blocks of these routes.

UQAM (in English, it stands for the University of Quebec at Montreal) has two residences open for summer rentals. They show up in some hotel booking sites. Here's a link in English http://www.residences-uqam.qc.ca/hot...isit-our-rooms
Both are reasonably close to Metro stations and to the Latin Quarter, Plateau, Place des Artes and other active centres. Some of the rooms are arranged in clusters around a central common area, which might suit your family. I suggest asking by e-mail (and also check on air conditioning since Montreal can be steamy in July.) Also you will have to find a commercial parking lot. It is a French-speaking university but they will take care of you in English.
You will probably miss the international jazz festival but the comedy festival might be on which will tax hotel capacity, so make your arrangements quickly. You can check the municipal tourism agency for apartments or even a bed-and-breakfast (gite) that could take all of you. http://www.tourisme-montreal.org/
Niagara-on-the-Lake is not a big place and its accommodations cater to the Shaw Festival in the summer. Finding a block of rooms for the middle of July will be a challenge at any price. You may be forced to settle for regular hotels in or near Niagara Falls.

For NOTL I think that the more "boutique hotels" are over your price range and/or may not fit 4 people to a room. There are B + B's that you can try, but you will have to e-mail or call them directly to determine bedding, etc. as they vary greatly.

One suggestion is the Hilton Garen Inn. They have rooms with 2 queen beds that are around your price range (if you have AAA/CAA they offer a discount as well. (And I think they may have a pool for the kids.)

Another suggestion (though not on in NOTL proper) is the White Oaks. They sometimes have good packages and it is a nice property. And they have a large indoor pool for the kids.
