Quebec-Montreal in Summer

Hi-
We are thinking of driving (8 hrs. non-stop) to Montreal-Quebec in Labor Day weekend (Sept 2-5, 2016) with our 5-year-old child. We went to Montreal & Quebec few years back on our anniversary in December as a couple. We loved the place with Christmas decorations & atmosphere. We have not been to Quebec City during the Summer time though.
1. How different is Quebec City during summer in terms of activities, atmosphere and things to do?
2. What would be kid-friendly activities at this time of the year?

To state the obvious, the weather in both cities will be hot rather than cold so a lot of activities are moved outdoors. Montreal in particular is jammed with summer events, including the world's biggest jazz festival and comedy festival, circus, grand prix, ethnic events, etc. But Labour Day does sort of mark the near-end of the season. You can consult calendars on big tourist websites for both places.

Where are you coming from? The highways can be wicked busy on that weekend.

In Montreal, I always love the Biodome. In the dead of winter the tropical section, complete with sloths, is a godsend. In summer, the Antarctic section with its penguins has more appeal.

Thank you for your suggestions & response.

@Southam- Are there any specific web-sites you recommend? Also, we were planning to spend majority of time in Quebec- any recommendations on that?

@eliztravels2- Coming from Jersey City, NJ. Is there penguins site in Montreal? Have no idea- could pl. elaborate?

the biodome is an indoor habitat of various environments - rainforest, desert, antarctic. I believe there are penguins in the antarctic habitat. The Biodome is in the old Olympic park complex, which also has a very cool looking slanted tower you can ride up in. Just across the street is the Insectarium, which a 5 year old may also enjoy. At the Old Port, lots family things can be found - family sized pedal car rentals, bike & rollerblade rentals (montreal has fabulous bike trails), boat rides, etc.
