Quebec City favorites?
 

Hello. I will be visiting Quebec City in August and have a few questions.

a. restaurants: any favorites?
b. do you know the Hotel Champlain? We are booked there. I tried a number of other hotels first but they had no rooms with two beds available for the dates of our stay. TA reviews look fine.
c. favorite day trip? We will have a car and would enjoy a day out of town.

I havent been but was given the cookbook on the site and the pictures have made it on the top of my to do list for my Quebec visit.

If you had more than a day Id suggest the Charlevoix area.

We ran out of time when we visited Quebec City but had been planning a day trip to Montmorency Falls. If I were going back then that is where I would plan to go.

a) It's been a few years since I've been, but I understand Cafe du Clocher Penche in the St. Roch district is still around and even has gotten recommended by folks here. It was reasonably-priced and a virtual unknown when I went in the early 2000s. A bit removed but walkable from the usual tourist stomping grounds of the city.

I'd be one of those people. We were in Québec City for my wife's birthday and had dinner at Café du Clocher Penché. Dinner for two with dessert, wine and gratuity was about $150. Service, food and atmosphere were excellent and I'd have no trouble at all recommending it. Most telling I think was that on a Sunday evening in January, getting a reservation was a near-run thing.

Two people we know have recommended Le Lapin Sauté in the Lower Town.

A couple of times we have day-tripped up the St. Lawrence River. It's an easy and pleasant drive of maybe 1.5 hours to Baie St. Paul which is a quaint little town on the water with some cafes, shops and restaurants. If you're feeling ambitious, you could go even farther - the scenery is quite lovely. Montmorency Falls is just outside of Quebec City and is on the way, so you could include a stop there in your trip.

We were in Quebec city for 3 nights last week and stayed at 81 rue Ste Anne, very near the Hotel Champlain. Your hotel looks nice from the outside, and we found the location very convenient for touring both the Upper (inside the walls) city and the Lower City. The climb up from the Lower City is really not hard and helps to work off the calories.

We had good meals at Le Lapin Sauté, Le Pain Béni, Aux Anciens Canadiens (had the lunch there, much better value than dinner) and Le Mistral Gagnant. Very good sandwiches for a picnic lunch from Paillard bakery

Thanks for the feedback on the Hotel Champlain. I have also considered Hotel Pur and Hotel 71. So hard to decide!

I appreciate the new information on restaurants, too. I will be celebrating my birthday there and a special dinner would be a good way to do it.

I took your advice and booked an overnight in the Charlevoix region. It looks gorgeous. Thank you for the suggestion.
