Quebec City
 

My wife and I will be spending one day in Quebec City in late October. What weather can we expect? Do we need warm clothes? As neither speaks French, do you think we'll have a serious language problem? Can you suggest any good tours? Thanks in advance.

Can't comment as to weather in October, but will say that we were just in QC in July, and people were exceptionally accomodating in terms of the language. Any attempts we made at speaking poor French were returned by English. I guess they realized they wouldn't get too far with us trying to speak French! We found no troubles with the language, and everyone we ran into at hotel, restaurants, etc. spoke both. I do think they appreciate if you at least try to say hello or please in French, or make some attempt at it. They'll figure you out soon though! <BR> <BR>As for tours, we took a horse carriage ride around town which was very nice, and I would recommend it. Have a wonderful time.

The weather in October is so variable - could be warm and sunny or chilly and dreary...Best bet is to check a 10-day forecast on the web, then pack.

If you only have one day in Quebec City, try to stay at the Chateau Frontenac. It is an exquisite, historic hotel in the middle of the nicest part of Quebec. From there you can walk to lots of restaurants (the hotel restaurants are great, too) and shops and historic sites. The boardwalk there is nice to walk up to the Citadelle and get a view of the whole area. Language will be no problem in the city. <BR>

I agree with the previous reply, the only place worth staying is the Chateau Frontenac. It is so well located most of your touring can be on foot. Don't forget the Fanicular right outside the hotel that will take you down to the lower town for a dollar. Lots of interesting stores for poking around. French is not required but do try to say at least "bonjour" and "merci" they will be much appreciated ( hello and thank-you). October weather can range from mid 40's to mid 70's and can be windy so be prepared for anything. Good walking shoes are essential as many streets are cobblestoned and the old city is very hilly. Don't forget your bathing suit, the Chateau has one of the most beautiful pool and spa areas I've seen,what better way to relax than in a whirlpool after a day of sightseeing.

The only language besides english is a smattering of spanish that we speak...what few words will I need in Quebec City... My experiences in traveling and meeting french-canadians unfortunately has been very negative and I would not want to have an unpleasant experience in Quebec City for the one day we will be there and I am going with an open mind..

Hi Jim, I agree with Chateau Frontenac, the best place to stay, a splurge well worth it especially for one night...as for your bad experiences with french-canadians, I am sure the Quebec people will compensate they are most obliging. As a french canadian it pains me to read such negative comments, hopefully your experience is an exception...
