Prince Edward Island-must do things
 

Hi, my husband, 25yrs daughter & I are spending a week on PEI in July 17. Apart from doing the Anne of Green Gables things to do, could you please give us other suggestions of places to visit and good places and food to eat. We are staying not far out of Charlottetown and want to visit there for a day but we want to drive around the island and walk some beaches etc, Any suggestions please

My friend and I returned from PEI this past September. Not far from Cavenish is Rustico where we ate at the Blue Mussel Café--if you like seafood. Don't be surprised if you have to stand in line before you get a table as it is very small. We also bought seven lobsters for $128.00 including tax at approximately one and half pounds each. We ate them at our cottage as they can be messy!

In addition we had dinner at Dalvay By-The-Sea Hotel and Restaurant. It is not far from Stanhope and probably about 25 kilometers from Charlottetown.

We stayed in a cottage near Stanhope. There is a lovely beach on the Gulf of St. Lawrence near Stanhope and a golf course.

Don't forget there is a $46.00 charge per car to leave PEI on the Confederation bridge.

You could read the novel Anne of Green Gables before you go. Anne is a cottage industry, in several senses, and her fans come from all over the world to identify locations in the novel. She may be the most famous Canadian in Japan.

Otherwise, think golf, another prime attraction in Canada's smallest province, and be prepared for rolling fields of potatoes.

Thanks Scotia and Southam - I have grown up with the novels and movies of Anne of Green Gables as have my daughters and granddaughter. Main reason for coming to PEI but its good to know when the festivals are on as well as other places to see and experience. Especially the restaurants and food - we are looking forward to the seafood. Hopefully its not too expensive. Any suggestions where to stay from PEI towards Quebec City? We wanted the best scenic route and stop about half-way. Thanks again

For your information, Dalvay-By-The Sea Restaurant is pricey but is in a lovely Queen Anne style hotel. I have never driven from PEI to Quebec City so cannot help you there.

I live in Charlottetown, PEI. :) I recommend you take a drive to the Eastern part of the Island, where you will find the best beaches, and much less commercialism. Check out Red Point or Basin Head, stop for a bite to eat in Souris. Cavendish/Stanhope/Dalvay and areas in Central PEI are great and all, but very busy and very touristy. And prices reflect that.

I also live on PEI and I would agree with Joanne806, I prefer the eastern side of the Island. Panmure Island and Greenwich National Park are beautiful, don't miss it! Seafood can be pricey, especially in the summer, but there are lots of choices for good restaurants, try Ricks Fish and Chips in St.Peters.

greenwich national park is beautiful. it is a flat walk from the parking lot ending at nice sand dunes and a beautiful beach. there is not much shade so i recommend sun screen, hats and lots of liquids if it is a hot day.
out of rustico we also went down to the harbour and went out on a fishing boat for a half day.

on your way back, i'd consider staying in alma, nb so you could visit hopewell rocks.

I live in Rustico and would recommend a visit here - a drive or bike through the national park from North Rustico to cavendish is beautiful. Blue Mussel cafe is a solid choice - also rustico has great fishing trips ( we use Joeys which is just out of North Rustico - you get a longer meander through the bay out to sea). Stop at Doirons on the wharf to buy your lobster and mussels to cook at your accommodation :) The Yellow House has the best lobster roll - it was new in 2016.


Things i do with friends/ family that visit:

1. Bike Brackley beach to Dalvay by the sea ( and back!) - stop at the covehead harbour/ lighthouse - you can grab fish and chips here at Richards or lunch/drink at Dalvay by the Sea

2. Greenwich National Park is my favourite - lovely walk on the boardwalk through wetlands and dunes to the beach. Lunch at Ricks Fish & Chips in St. Peters.

3. Point Prim lighthouse - beautiful - at low tide you can explore the shoreline - there is also a chowder house here - it is very popular now and super busy but worth it for the scenery and good food

4. Victoria by the sea - lovely lunch spot or rent kayaks

5. New Glasgow - the preserve company and gardens, Glasgow glen farm cheese makers ( bakery and pizza), The Mill at New Glasgow restaurant.

6. The east coast - take any side road north of Souris and you end up at a beach. Grab oysters and a lobster roll at the lobster shack.
