Places to stay, things to do in Moncton, Shediac area and close region in Nova Scotia
 

At the end of August, my family, 2 adults 2 children (9&11) and my father-in-law are traveling to the Moncton, Shediac region to visit his birthplace 91 years ago. We'll be in the area for about 8-9 days. We'd need places to stay (with pool, preferrably more resort-like rather than bed and breakfast). We'll probably drop him off for a few days with relatives, while we would do more rigorous activities though he still walks faster than myself. We're flying from NYC into Halifax rather than Moncton to save about 4 hours flying time. How far is Moncton from Halifax (about the same no doubt). Can anyone recommend hotels in this region with some nearby activities and day trips for the family.

Sorry no rec's fro New Brunswick but the Digby Pines Resort N.S. is lovely and about 1/2 way, around 2 1/2 hours from Halifax airport.

The Delta Beasejour on Main Street is probably the fanciest hotel in Moncton, and has an indoor pool.

If he was born in the Moncton General Hospital, he'll find it has turned into a university.

How long has it been since he was there?

Cy's is gone; moved from High Street to Main, and then disappeared.

And I'd like a report back if you discover Gould's, outside of Shedica, on the way to Parlee Beach. Gould's sold fried clams half a century ago.

Was he raised in Moncton? My mother would be about the same age if she were still alive, and she lived in Moncton from about 1915 to 1946.

Driving from Halifax Airport to Moncton - approx 2 to 2.5 hours

Day trips:

The Hopewell Rocks - A provincial park about 30 minutes from Moncton featuring the highest tides in the world. Definitely try to visit at high and low tide but if can only do one then recommend low tide so that you can walk on the beach.

Fundy National Park - About 1 hour from Moncton. Great views of the bay, golfing, hiking, etc. Also great place to get lobster and go for a picnic.

PEI - About 1 hour from Shediac. You can go over Confederation Bridge (return toll of almost $40...can't remember exact amount). PEI is probably my favourite place in the world. Enjoy driving here since it is very picturesque and lots of beaches, etc.

Magic Mountain / Magnetic Hill - water park with a zoo as well just on the outskirts of Moncton. Great for kids for the day.

Accommodations - probably the Delta Beausejour is your best bet for right in Moncton, since it is right downtown with a pool. There's also Chateau Moncton and the hotel at Crystal Palace (although can't remember what it's called). Crystal Palace would be the best for the kids since there's a theme park inside (and outside in the summer) and you are right next to Champlain Place (shopping mall).

Digby Pines is nice but nowhere near where you want to be.

Driving distance - 2 hours from Halifax Airport to Shediac/ a bit further to Moncton (another 15 / 20 minutes)
