Places to go/see in Vancouver

Hi! I will be traveling to Vancouver, Canada to attend a conference in late July. I will have my family in tow and would like to tack on an extra week to vacation. I am not familiar with the area. Can anyone suggest places on Vancouver/Victoria Island. We are big campers and were thinking of doing this there. Thanks!

Although we won't be camping, I found the following site a great help in planning our holiday on Vancouver Island.

I had been in Vancouver/Victoria on August/2001 to see my cousin that lived in Victoria for one year.
Don`t forget to make reservations because the camps probably will be full.
Good trip, It is a great choose.

Sigh...

Once again-there is no such place as Victoria Island-not in Canada anyway.

Start at www.bcadventure.com and be prepared to spend hours and hours clicking-BC is a vast place with dozens of different options available.

Dear Condescending Carl...... like you know the exact name of every world city/region/area? Yes, I knew it wasn't Victoria Island, but there is Vancouver Island with a city called Victoria. Thanks for bringing it to everyone's attention, though, that the original poster was wrong. Hope you feel better about yourself.

Dave,
On "the island", Tofino is a great place for whale watching, hiking and camping. However it is a bit of a trek on a windy road to the west side of the island...but totally worth it in my opinion. Also, there were quite a few bears when I was there. If you want to stick to the east side of the island, there are great campsites all over Vancouver island and you can visit Victoria and all it's attractions and maybe Qualicum (spelling?) beach area as well. If you want to stick to the mainland, you might want to look into Whistler area. Really great winter and summer.

Dear inferior-feeling Jennifer-if you spent as much time on this board as many of the BC-based posters and lived in BC as I do you'd see this mistake over and over.

Did you know we sometimes email each other back and forth about the different gaffes that visitors to BC make?

Nothing nasty of course 'we are Canadian' after all-just private jokes.

FYI-My geographical knowledge is excellent-Victoria Island is found in Australia and maybe the Arctic as well.

Leaving the Trailer Park for regular trips does wonders for a person-you should try it sometimes!

When I was a kid I liked camping at Long Beach (Pacific Rim National Park) and Miracle Beach. Of course there were a lot fewer people then.

There are campsites all over the island, like Little Qualicum Falls, Petroglyph Provincial Park and French Beach to name a few.

For something different there is Sidney Spit Marine Park. You have to take a short ferry ride to get to it and there are no stores or cars, but carts are provided for toting camping gear. Fallow deer are on the island.
