Passport question
I am leaving for Montreal on Thursday. I pulled out my passport today and realized I have not changed it since I got married 2 years ago. I obviously can not get it changed in time. Does customs check the name on your passport against your plane ticket? Or should I just bring my birth certificate and a drivers license? Thanks!!!

To be safe bring all three but the immigration people are not so obtuse as to not understand that you changed your name upon getting married. The passport is still your best ID but your drivers license with your married name on it would clear up any confusion.

You will get closer scrutiny if you are flying than if you are driving. In either case, I don't think you will have a problem. Bring a copy of your marriage certificate (as well as birth certificate or driver's licence) with you. That should bridge any gap between your passport and your ticket.

Interestingly enough, for Quebec residents, your birth name is your legal name, whether or not you are married. This has been true for some years.

In the rest of Canada, there is no legal requirement to take on your husband's name or to do anything special if you decide not to change your name.

In fact and in general, it seems to me that it is getting more and more uncommon for North American women to adopt their husbands' names - they either keep their own or, very often, use both.

The former solution is easier, because there are no documents to change.

More information than you needed, but I hope it helps.
On my last airline trip, the woman in front of me had an airline ticket in her married name and her drivers license and passport in her maiden name. They would not let her check in and called "someone higher up." After at least 30 minutes, they escorted her through security and I quess she was allowed on. It may depend on who is checking. But bring all 3 and expect potential problesm.

Sarah, if it isn't possible to have your airline ticket reissued, make sure you have a copy (certifed would be better) of your marriage license. If you were ever to change the name on your passport (and I suggest you do that, if that's the name on your other IDs) that's what you'd need anyway . The problem as others have mentioned it here is twofold--first, someone has to let you on the plane (which they will not easily do, if the ID and ticket don't match) then you have to deal with Canadian immigration (its not Customs that is concerened with people).
So, to cover yourself this time, you'd need
1) ticket and ID to match it --which is usually defined as proof of identity (drivers license PLUS proof of citizenship--your birth certificate (certified)
OR possibly
2)ticket, ID, plus the marriage license to bridge the two names
Good luck.

Sarah,
We drove to Montreal in November and forgot our passports! We were told to go inside the Customs OFfice and we explained how stupid we were, they were extremely nice and courteous. They checked us out and let us in!
I think they will accept your passport with your birth certificate (take the drivers license too) but give yourself plenty of time to deal with everyone at the airport.Have a good trip!
