Parking in Montreal
 

We will be on a driving trip and will be in Montreal for 4 nights. we don't plan on driving the car while in Montreal and would love to be able to park it and leave it for the four days. Hotelsl appear to be charging 20-25 CAD. Does anyone have any suggestions where we might park the car for less money? Thanks

Can't imagine where you cld park for less than that in Montreal for 4 days but somebody may know of a place. $20/day is not very much for parking in a major city.

All parking is tight but the situation varies from place to place. If you are staying in the Plateau, for instance, you may find a place to park on the sidestreets for free, although the search for a vacancy can be arduous. Three regulations to keep in mind: Sections of most residential streets are reserved for permit-holders, so watch the signs (in French). Many streets have two-hour no-parking restrictions a couple of times a week to allow street cleaning or snow removal. Expect no mercy from parking enforcement if you forget to move your car. And in some areas individual street meters have been removed in favour of central pay-and-display machines, so be certain that that good spot you just snared is not in reality a pay sector.
If your want to avoid this juggling act you will find few paid lots in the older sections of the city. The above poster is right: $20 is relatively cheap for a big city.

We're staying at the Westin and parking is $27 per day. Your parking rules sound just like ours in DC--no mercy for a slip up. In DC (and NYC I have found) there are some places that may not be immediately obvious to a tourist where one can park for less than the going rate & prices can vary by garage--sometimes as much as $10 less per day. Was hoping that might be the situation in Montreal. Thanks for your responses

Econo Park st the airport is $15.00 per day. There is a free shuttle to the terminal and you can take 747 bus downtown. You are going to spend a whole day of your stay trying to save $20.00.

We were in Montreal last weekend, staying at the Delta hotel on Sherbrooke. I noticed that there was an outdoor parking lot behind the House of Jazz on Rue Aylmer and Avenue President Kennedy, which is one block south of Sherbrooke. The rates per day were confusing but looked to be either $10 or $20 per day.
I know parking in the Complexe Desjardins on Rue Jeanne-Mance is inexpensive on the weekends.

Neither of these would be too far from your hotel so you could check them out and decide whether it is worth the hassle to move your car.

It looks like it might be a little cheaper at the Palais des Congres - website says $20 for 24 hours but that might not have in/out privileges and might go up during events. When you arrive you might want to check it out first?

@Elizabeth -- a GTG would be fun - would love to meet u and c Kodi, but Toronto is not on this itinerary. We definitely plan a trip to Toronto @ some point though.

We always drive to Montreal from our home in VT but once there we almost never use our car. Public transportation is very good.

By the way, we went to an exhibit on Inuit art at the McCord Museum last Saturday and thought it was very good.

Don't try street parking, You will almost certainly end up with a ticket. Parking signs in Montreal can be confusing

ie: you can park her if the moon is waxing but not waning and only if the month does not include a "e"

And they look for out of town license plates

@johnnyo-well, we will be there in July, so it won't be a month with an "e" in it. Will have to check on the moon waxing or waning...thanks for the advice to avoid street parking

But "juillet" does have an "e". ;)

a quick update-- posters on TA mentioned parking at the garage at the Grande Bibliotheque on Rue Berri & Boul. de Maisonneuve. Rates are 9$ on weekends and 12$ on weekdays. It's about a 10-15 minute walk to Vieux Montreal. this has worked out perfect for us.

be careful, i followed street signs and thought i could safely on street park. there were no signs except for areas where I couldn't park, didn't park there. but, apparently, where i was parked was metered parking with payment at some machine that I never saw.... and neither the car in front of me or the car behind me seemed to have paid. i got a ticket because i was (a) out of province (b) cadillac (c) not sure .... maybe it was covered by snow but whatever. $50 fine plus $10 admin fees. They can stick it up there corrupt illegal city government, really seems unfair to have no signs. so that's it, if you visit and park down town, you need to look for a machine to pay or else expect a ticket. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/...rticle4184792/

As I indicated on this thread in April, parking meters are disappearing. The new system is centrally computer-controlled. You find a spot, note its number, then enter that number into a paypoint machine along with your money for the stay. This allows the authority to watch for congestion, and also where expired spots are ripe for tickets. Or so suspicous minds believe.
