One more question about the Wedgewood Hotel
 

It's not the one that's near construction currently, right? That's the Opus, isn't it? Just want to make sure before I make a reservation. Any other caveats?

I just stayed there a few nights ago and there is some construction/renovation going on across the street on the roof garden of the law courts but it's supposed to be done by April (not sure when you're planning on going), and it wasn't very noisy in any event. And the hotel is also doing work on their elevators, but that's supposed to be done by the end of this month.

I hadn't stayed there in years and I really enjoyed my stay. It's a lovely hotel.

I stayed at the Wedgewood last spring. I was in a small suite with a separate sitting room.

My likes:
The bathroom in my room had recently been redone. It wasn't huge but it was very nice.
Umbrella in the room. Always good for the west coast.
Nice presentation at turndown... cookies, complimentary water and the tv guide open to the appropriate day.

My dislikes:
The front desk staff were competant but not friendly at all (a little intimidating, in fact).
The key is on a giant piece of wood which you left at the front desk when you went out (what year are we in?!)
The room had a stuffy smell and was pretty dated.

While the hotel was fine, I wasn't so thrilled that I would stay there again.

P.s. I have very detailed notes on the hotel and room, so if you have any questions... from the towel size to the television, I can tell you...

P.p.s. If you do decide to go to Victoria, I can recommend two very nice B&Bs there...

Interesting, goldilox. That wasn't my experience with the front desk staff--I found them to be friendly and welcoming. And no one told me I was supposed to leave the key at the desk, so I just took it with me in my purse. I can see your point about the size of the key but it was a small enough issue that it didn't detract from my overall positive experience. In fact, I tend to lose those ubiquitous credit card style keys in my purse, so the size of it was almost a plus for me ;-).

My room definitely didn't smell stuffy and it seemed pretty fresh, not dated in the least. I wonder if they've updated some of the rooms since you stayed, perhaps? I especially *loved* the wonderful Frette towels--they had to be the softest towels I've ever had the pleasure of using.

The Wedgewood is my absolutely favourite hotel - I've stayed there several times and loved it. Contrary to one poster's experience, I found the staff incredibly helpful, prepared to go out of the way for guests and very pleasant. I'm not bothered by "dated" furniture - not really sure what that means - most of our furniture at home is kind of dated too, so perhaps that explains it. Didn't notice any feeling of stuffiness in the rooms. I'd recommend the place to anybody!
