One day in Toronto
 

Will be in Toronto for one day on the last weekend in June. What are the must sees for a quick visit?

It would help to know more of your tastes...art, sports, music, theatre, people-watching, hiking, nature????

Yes, Lee, your point is well taken and the tone and language you used made your message loud and clear. Perhaps it would help to know our tastes, age, and all those stereotypes.... But this is a public message board... and there might be someone else out there in cyber-space who also has exactly one day to visit Toronto !!!! And that cyberspace person may very well have exactly the OPPOSITE tastes to me..... I guess what I was looking for was an overview--just some ideas...or hints if you will--SOMETHING to pique my interest-- from those who live in or have been to Toronto and know the area/geography....surely I don't have to give a character/personality analysis in order to receive THAT!!!! <BR><BR>Have a great day!

I don't think that Lee was being nasty there, just trying to get more information. For hockey fans, seeing the Hockey Hall of Fame is a must see or maybe the old Maple Leaf Gardens. For a baseball fan, it might be seeing the Sky Dome. Other people like the CN Tower, Harbourfront or Toronto Islands. If you're from a small community, you might want to shop - Bloor Street and Yorkville have all the high end shops. The Eatons Centre draws a lot of people, although it's really just a mall. There are some good museums (Royal Ontario Museum) and galleries (AGO - Art Gallery of Ontario). Some people just like to hang out in neighbourhoods - Queen Street West - kind of funky - or Little Italy. I know when my 16 year old niece visited, all she wanted to do was visit the place where Much Music is made - that's Queen Street West.<BR>

Bob,<BR>I must say this is one of the first times I will ever respond to someone on a message board and give them heck. But quite frankly I would hope that you rethink YOUR attitude. I cannot believe that someone would ask such a broad question and then be insulted and respond with such arrogance to a request for some clarification. It is a valid request or we could all spend lots of time giving you suggestions only to hear that none are suitable or what you had in mind. Remember, YOU are the one who posted on the board asking for help. Pardon us for trying to narrow it down a bit. Toronto is a large city with many "must sees" for many different reasons.<BR>I for one certainly wont be "helping" you with your "must see" list and would hope that my fellow countrymen refrain as well. I have read a lot of crap on these boards, but quite frankly, for someone who appears quite articulate, you certainly are showing your ignorance.<BR>

I may have even helped YOU answer some kind of broad question at some point, LEE. There seems to be a contingent of people on this board who have a problem with travellers asking general questions and instead of ignoring the question (if you don't like the question, or the way it was phrased, don't answer it)a huge issue is made...quite snottily I might add...(I'm pretty sure Lee could have phased a response that was a bit more friendly) because it doesn't meet some one else's criteria of what should or should not be posted on this message board. Well, I have decided to stand up for the users of this message board who have been on the receiving end of this odd phenomenon. From now on I will REFUSE to assist any poster who has the audicity to post a SPECIFIC question. Yes, that's right folks, only broad, vague questions will be answered by me and my group of insiders...people like Lee and "Cantbelieve" will cringe and eventually walk down the road to madness as open-ended questions are continually topped with information that is expansive and applicable to many. Ouch! What a sickening series of postings. I'm so glad that most posters are not as nasty as Bob or I wouldn't spend time here. Lee, it was a natural question, keep asking it.

Bob - Please reconsider your one-day stop in Toronto... I will also be visiting that weekend and you might ruin my day... Canada is a big country...try Vancouver that weekend... thanks buddy!

Thanks to all who said it for me so I didn't have to while I was still steaming mad from Bob's original reception to my request. Clearly I just wanted clarification SO THAT I COULD HELP more specifically. <BR><BR>I am a Torontonian transplanted from Newfoundland and about to be posted back there. I know I am going to miss my beloved adopted Toronto. At the moment I am on this forum mainly to help others learn to love it as I have.When I first arrived, there was no "welcome mat" like the one Fodors.com puts out for strangers to our fair city. It was overwhelming to me, a small town kid. <BR><BR>So thanks to all you folks who over the years have helped me see this great city for the terrific place it really is. I can feel the Bob-irritation slipping away as I try to decide between Le Select Bistro and Grano's for dinner...neither of which will accept an reservation from anyone named Bob for the next 6 months!

Okay. Bob--come to Toronto & have fun as you see fit. But--please lighten up, as anyone visiting a new spot may find themselves in need of assistance from strangers, police, bus drivers, and/or hotel concierges. One should not bite the hand that feeds them!

Maybe it was those three evil question marks that Lee placed at the end of his post that set poor Bob off...???

This is an interesting thread. I think Message boards are like email because it is up to the reader of the message to interpret the tone of the message. IMHO Bob asked a fair question but it was vague. Lee's innocent request for more information was probably misread because her response started with "it would help to know..." and ended with four question marks. Personally, I can see how that kind of response could be misinterpreted. Of course that doesn't justify Bob's response. Whatever. Everyone should just try to be careful when they post. :)<BR><BR>Peace out.

Bob - Someone as thin-skinned as you shouldn't be posting on a board of this nature. Lee's question was neither inappropriate or stereotypical. If others with different tastes have questions, then surely they can ask their own - I don't think they need you to be their spokesman. Go buy a Fodor's book on Toronto and see if that will help you - because interacting with people is obviously not one of your strong personality traits.

You have to go to the CN Tower and ride the elevator to the observation deck. On a clear/semi-clear day, the view is spectacular!
