Old montrel vs Downtown

Were to stay old Montrel or Downtown need advice before booking hotel

The answer depends on your own preferences. We always stay downtown because it puts us closer to the things that we like to do. (Shopping is high on the list). On a given visit we may or may not make it the old town. It really is not an either or as it is not hard to visit both areas.

Old town is really only 10-15 walk away - probably not even that! I would suggest you look at St. Denis street where a lot of the action happens - great restaurants, lots of shopping.

If your stay is only a few days, and it's your first visit, I would recommend the old city. It's very picturesque and European feeling. The drawbacks to the old city are that it's a good uphill 20 minute walk to the downtown (the Metro isn't even that close). It's also the most touristy and expensive part of the city. If you are going to be in Montreal more than two nights, the downtown area, or the plateau/St. Denis area, have much more to see and do, and are better connected to the metro.

I would stay downtown and spend an afternoon and evening in Old Montreal.
