Old Montreal Metro
 

Planning a first time visit to Montreal in January or February. Would like to stay at a nice place in Old Montreal. Considering the weather, is there a Metro station in the Old City, and if so what would be the best hotel within easy walking distance? Thanks.

There are basically 3 metro stations serving Old Montreal, all on its northern edge:<BR><BR>- Champ de Mars (closest to City Hall, March&eacute; Bonsecours area)<BR>- Place d'Armes (closest to Notre-Dame and hotel area). Most hotels (Place d'Armes, Bonaparte, St-James, Vieux-Port, Nelligan, etc,) are within a 10 min. walk. H&ocirc;tel Place d'Armes would be the closest.<BR>- Square Victoria (at Western edge, not many hotels there).<BR>

When you say &quot;considering the weather&quot;, please be advised that while, to Montreal folks, the metro stations are conveniently located, you MUST be dressed so as to be comfortable while out and about in very frigid temps! Depending upon your hotel location and the nearest station, there are hills involved as well. An &quot;easy&quot; walk for the natives is much more difficult for us tourists who aren't used to walking much or being out and about in the cold.

I agree with Donna, if you are going to Mtl. in Jan/March and you are not used to our winters I suggest you choose a hotel that CONNECTS with a subway, such as The Queen Elizabeth. In the middle of winter old Montreal is cold and isolated.

Thank you all very much. I can take a hint and will plan on minimizing the chance of weather adventures. The suggestion about using a hotel close to a Metro stop makes a lot of sense. We are going to Montreal to experience the atmosphere and culture. Any suggestions as to a very good smaller hotel, with charm close to the Metro? Thanks again.

Our favorite place to stay is Hotel de la Montagne (they have a website). We love that place. Especially during the cold weather. Two excellent restaurants and and a fabulous cocktail lounge with terrific live music within. Ask for a room on an upper floor overlooking Cresent St (also dining and nightlife heaven). Equi-distant from two metro stations. Rooms are huge, comfortable, with all the ammenities. Half a block from St-Catherine, a fabulous street to explore. Weekend rates include breakfast (Sunday brunch, which is magnificent, at Le Beaux Jeudi's). To us, it's the Ritz at moderate prices If you want to visit Vieux Montreal, taxi fares are very reasonable (especially considering the exchange rate). To me, anyway, Vieux Monteal is a HIKE in the cold weather from any of the nearest metro tations. Although, you really can't go wrong with a four-star on Priceline or Hotwire. All those are near metro stations. Go to www.biddingfortravel.com before bidding on Priceline. Once in a while Expedia has some amazing rates, but comparison shop before booking (often they're much higher than booking directly).

We stayed at Radisson Centerville, 777 University, now a Delta hotel. It connected to Square Victoria, but as pointed out, not much in the area nights &amp; weekends.

If you are looking for a hotel connected to the metro, go for the Marriott Chateau Champlain, the Queen Elizabeth or the Delta Centre Ville. An excellent value, which I would recommend, is the Marriott Residence Inn. It is right across the street to Peel Metro station and is in an excellent location.

Just returned from a wonderful long weekend in Montreal. Stayed at the St. Sulpice in Vieux Montreal. Wonderful new hotel. Large spacious suite. Great location. Have also stayed at Auberge Bonaparte. Smaller rooms but also very nice. Would recommend either and both have websites.<BR>You must try Les Remparts for dinner too! Hope this helps

Le Germain on Mansfield, arounmd the corner from Sherbrook and St Catherine, Metro on ST CAtherine.<BR>Great location, much more to do , many good restaurants.
