October on Cape Breton
 

A change in plans has pushed back my 9 day vacation to Cape Breton/Halifax to October 9th -17th. My primary interest will be half-day hikes along the Cabot Trail. It seems that most of the accomodations will remain open through at least mid-October. However, my question is: will the weather be okay at this time or can I expect alot of rain?

While it is doubtful that the time you spend there will be totally rain-free, you are unlikely to have day after day of it. In fact, they often say of this area in general,&quot;if you don't like the weather, just wait 5 minutes...'cause it will change&quot;. Thats the maritime climate.<BR><BR>This is a great time of year to visit, the fall colours should be optimum then and you should have the trails to yourself, except for the wildlife. My husband and I hiked at precisely that time of year even further north of you (in Newfoundland) last year and experienced no difficulties.<BR><BR>BTW, Halifax (where my daughter goes to university) is great all year round, with many interesting sites and excellent pubs, clubs and restaurants. Have a ball!

It´s the absolutely best time to visit Nova Scotia. We´ve been there last summer and again in fall (nearly exactly the time when you will be going). The colours were unbelievable, the weather was very nice. We will be back next fall.<BR>Karen, Germany

Rain and fog are probably more likely in the fall, so dress accordingly... But it can also be nice and sunny. Anyway if the weather dampens your outdoors activities you won't be bored in Cape Breton if you like celtic music (Celtic Colours Festival, Oct. 10-18th 2003 - http://www.celtic-colours.com/core.php) Because of the festival you might want to book accommodations in advance in the towns where venues are taking place. And if you're lucky it will be the right time for the beautiful fall foliage. Enjoy!<BR>

I echo all the remarks above. Awesome time to visit. I would do Cape Breton first - it is our thanksgiving so the trail will be busy, however, you should be able to get accommodations. The leaves will be in full color that first week. If we do get a heavy rain storm, it will play havoc on the leaves. Order the doers and dreamers guide from the NS tourism website. Halifax is a great spot, and if you like to hike there are lots of trails available around here. Also great &quot;rock jumping&quot; at Peggy's Cove.
