NYC too Montreal and Quebec with Kids

I am going on a road trip with my sons ages 10 and 12 from NYC to Montreal and Quebec in August. I am looking for suggestions for an overnight stop on the return trip from Quebec to NYC that might be interesting and fun for kids as well as a short stop enroute from NYC to Montreal. We will drive to Montreal in one day but the return form Quebec is a little long for us to do in one day. We have never been to either city and so I am also seeking some direction on what part of Montreal to stay in that would be convenient to restaurants and the sights. We will probably stay in the old part of town in Quebec city. Thank you!

Lake George New York is a resort area that you can easily stop for an overnight between NYC and Montreal or Quebec City. I hope this post is not too late--don't know when in August you were going.

Am going week of August 22nd and am very late in planning - I'm on now looking for hotels in Montreal and Quebec! Thank you - I'll look into Lake George for our stop on the way back - a neighbor just mentioned that to me as well!

In Montreal I would stay in the historic Old Montreal section which is close to the Port (St. Lawrence) and on the edge of the main downtown. There are several boutique inns there, but with a 10 and 12 year old - you might want to check out the Embassy Suites which is pretty well on the edge of both the main downtown and Old Quebec and caters to families with 2 rooms suites, breakfasts included, etc.

Quebec City - You will want to focus on the "Vieux Quebec" district - Old Quebec, which is the historic 17th century fortressed city with cobblestone streets, street artists, interesting little shops and many restaurants. The top Hotel is the Chateau Frontenac which overlooks the old city. There are a number of inns within the old section, and several chain hotels nearby (e.g. Hilton and others).

For stops - years ago we made a diversion to Lake Placid on the way to Montreal, stayed overnight, did a drive up to the top of Whiteface Mountain.

On the way back from Quebec City, Magog is a pleasant and bustling tourist town near the Vermont border.

In my first paragraph in my reply above, I was talking about Montreal and of course meant to say "Old Montreal" (not "old Quebec) in this paragraph.

Thank you for the information! The Frontenac (which my heart was set on) does not have a room within my budget that can accommodate all of us but I am looking into some other options in the old part of town. I am booking the embassy suites which looks ideal for us. Thanks again.

great info. I'm from NY area as well and was looking into taking a trip with my 11 yr old either this Fall or Winter to Montreal/Quebec City, but am undecided as to whether to drive or take Amtrak in.

Your kids might like to see Fort Ticonderoga on the way back to NY.

By any chance does anyone know about free Cirque du Soleil shows in Quebec - I haven't been able to find anything current on the web...Thanks!
