Nova Scotia - Has anyone ever stayed at Cape D'Or??

Planning a trip to NS in August of next year. Was wondering if anyone has ever stayed at Cape D'Or light keepers cottage...it looks wonderfu...but is it worth it??

Thanks

I haven't stayed a the lighthouse, but always wanted to. The location is very remote and breathtaking. The last time we went up to the lighthouse, the road was dirt and probably wished we were driving our truck instead of the car, but we made it no problem. At the top of the road, there is a lookoff and a couple of paths with interpretation panels, etc. You have to walk down to the lighthouse. The view is great, but be warned, there is fog a lot of the time, hence the need for the lighthouse :) I have heard very good things from several friends who stayed there. Remember, it is more of an experience. I believe there are three bedrooms they rent out with a common livingroom. Meals used to be provided as part of the stay.

My wife and I operate a B&B in Sydney on Cape Breton Island and over the last ten years have had the privilege of having guests from around the world who have chosen Nova Scotia as their destination. Many of our guests have also stayed at the lighthouse on Cape d'Or. All of them raved about the experience. While down in that area don't forget to go to Advocate Harbour and have a meal at the "Wild Caraway". One of our guests said it was the best meal they had in the Maritimes.

Cheers

We took a day trip the site a few years ago to watch the D'ory riptides come in and out, and were so taken by the place that we returned several times for daytrips. The first time we brought our own picnic, not anticipating many/any services. We went to the restaurant to use their washroom and ended up having a hearty snack and were impressed with their spirit and food so we also returned for a w/end staying at the cabin.

It's a very simple place as mentioned but lovely and IMHO very much worth it. FYI, I believe the rooms in the front get the "lighthouse" light which circles 24/7.

The restaurant is surprisingly good! At the time the owner/chef was a fella from Saskatchewan, in the middle of Canada! It's a tiny place and non-guests are welcome to eat there too.

It can get pretty windy there so be sure to bring layers. DH can sit and watch the waves for hours and hours and it gets pretty cold sitting around. When the tide goes out you can also walk below the cliffs. However, only recommended for those who are active and make sure you beat the tide back in by a lot...there are no rescue services (and even if there were it'd be too late by the time they arrived).

Enjoy-la!

Less likely to experience either fog or cold in August: it should be a wonderful trip.

Can't comment on the lighthouse experience, but we camped in the area in July, had a fantastic time. A fledging eaglet ended up in the lake near our campsite and had to swim to shore. Then, flew and air dried his wings as he sat on top of our camper.

Sorry, I need to edit last post. We were at Bras d'Or lake.
