Nova Scotia...can we wing it re accomodations in October?

In early to mid October, do we have to make advance reservations or do you think we can just play it by ear? Would like to be able to just drive around as we please and stop wherever looks good. Or is this unrealistic for October? (Thinking of Cape Breton)

I say don't try it because the summer is long gone and many places close. You might wing it, but you also might drive a ways to find a place that is open.
Be interesting to hear more comments.

It's better to have reservations than not. Nicer places at better prices than when you "wing" it. Otherwise, it's best to get to the next destination around check-in time, secure a room, then explore. Nothing worse than driving about late at night, expecially if it's pouring down rain, looking for a room. Sometimes, you can negotiate the price when just showing up, other times not and you pay premium.

It really is best to have reservations. Just be sure to note the cancellation policies, so if your plans change you won't be charged. You probably won't have much a problem if you "wing it", but I, personally, would not want to waste valuable time shopping for a room or wondering if I'm paying WAY too much for it just so as to "drive around as we please".

Reservations may be difficult around Thanksgiving weekend since so many people take that time to do the "trail". Larger resorts such as the Keltic host a lot of tour buses so may be busy as well. I would suggest if there is one spot you want reservations for the night make it in advance. Otherwise use the Nova Scoita check-in system around mid-day to make a reservation based on where you think you will be by evening. If you enjoy B&B's, I don't think you will have a problem.

Probably best to book in advance and place reservation on 6pm hold for day of arrival if hotel allows you to do so. When I worked in reservations at a hotel here I remember October was a big month for bus tours taking up rooms....
