Nightlife for the aged in Montreal
 

Well, not too aged. My husband and I are 50+ and are spending a few nights in Montreal this long weekend. We want to go out Saturday evening for some music--jazz, rock or dance club, etc. An extensive search on Montreal websites does not show much, in fact there are few events happening it seems. Where does one go (at our age) for some evening entertainment of this sort?

In old montreal, there is les pierrots, they own les 2 pierrots, bar, and jardin nelson, restaurant; the latter has a jazz group all weekend, the former has a band on friday and saturday night. Both are in old montreal.

I know nothing about the dance clubs, but I think
anyone over 40 sticks out like a sore thumb; kids in montreal invade the clubs at 16. Most clubs are on st laurent and in the plateau area; don't go if you're sent there by a concierge or a cab driver.

let us know what you find; live jazz background music and a dance club are 2 different venues I think.

Walking around the old port area on saturday night should be entertaining, tons of people milling about, specially on a warm night and the weekend weather is very promising.

I consider I've been out if I have an after dinner drink on a terrace so what do I know !!!!!!!!!!

Hopefully someone more savvy on the bar/club scene will offer better suggestions than me.

While it's true that kids in Montreal invade the dance clubs at 16, this does not mean that those of us 30, 40, 50, 60 and up do not have options. There is a glossy called "Nightlife" that lists all the TRENDY spots in Montreal... so pick it up, and if the nightclub is highly recommended in there, chances are you would not want to go as even 30-year-olds are starting to feel old in these places. One nice thing is that 20-something "hip" clubs tend to START filling up a bit after midnight and I can barely stay up after 11pm LOL. Unless you're like my ~75-year-old friend Anne-Marie who says she likes going to hip Tokyo Bar and dancing hip-hop music (which I'm not sure how she does with that arthritic knee of hers); and says they call her "Nana Funk" there, you probably won't enjoy these. Then again, no one has yet to confirm these stories of hers ;).

Ideas include Biddle's or Upstairs for jazz, maybe a Moroccan restaurant like le Sabayon for belly dancing followed by dancing; I'd recommend Cafe Sarajevo which often has fun, danceable live music entertainment; as for rock, I'm not sure. All of these you'll feel comfortable I think. There's a ton going on; check out Hour or Mirror... anyplace that has jazz entertainment or "world beat" starting at say 9-10pm, I think all ages would feel comfortable going to.

Montreal has many options for people of all ages! Yes many of the clubs are full of "younger" people, but there are many that have a varied crowd.

Jardin Nelson, which was mentioned above, is a restaurant, not a bar or club but it does have live jazz music in a beautiful outdoor terrace. The vibe is great but the food was disappoing both times that i was there.

If you walk along crescent street you will see where all the "kids" are going and where the "aged" are lol! Crescent is a fun street just to walk around and enjoy the evening.

Pick up a copy of the Mirror or the Hour as mentioned and take a look to see if anything interests you. There is no such thing as a dull night in Montreal :)

Thanks all, I will check out the Mirror and Hour papers, will peruse the "hipper" streets and check out a few of the suggestions. When it comes right down to it though, you are only as young as you feel! (Actually we are usually in bed before midnite too!)

One of the posts suggests Biddle's for jazz. it used to be at 2060 rue Aylmer but now the House of Jazz is at this location.

I am sure you will find plenty to do this weekend if you check the local papers. Have a good time!
