Niagra-on-the-Lake
 

We're invited to NOL in August. We have two children. Other than the falls, the area doesn't appear to cater to children. Any suggestions? I would particularly like to know if there is a public pool or recreation center. Seven-year olds don't appreciate Shaw, I'm afraid!

There's an old Fort in Niagara on the Lake the child will enjoy visiting. There's the butterfly conservatory between Niagara Falls and NotL you should visit. If it's a girl, she'll love the Tricia Romance art gallery just off the main street in NotL. And it might beworth whileto govisit the Welland Canal, and watch a ship going through a giant lock. <BR>In Niagara Falls, there arelots of tacky but fun museums and horror houses and wax museums; more highly recommended (I've got a six year old friend in Niagara Falls) is the Maid of the Mist boat trip the bottom of the falls. <BR>BAK

Hi Betsy-Just returned yesterday from a quick NOTL trip. You'll find most child friendly things to do at the Falls-about 15 minutes away via the QEW-maybe 1/2 hr via the Niagara Parkway-which is the scenic route. Ft George would be of interest to the kids(it opens this 4/1 for the season), and maybe a shop specializing in kids toys/clothes in NOTL, and the Lake Ontario beaches would hold their interest, otherwise things are geared towards adults. There are lots of wineries to visit betwee the Falls and NOTL, as well as antique shops, but these wouldn't hold kids attention very long. Agreed.... the Welland Canal, lock 7(I think), is a must see. I'm in my 50's and it was a first and a really interesting experience. I think youngsters would find it facinating.

We are near the Olde Towne and would suggest that with children you visit Simcoe Park. There is play equipment and a wading pool. The area where the Niagara River joins Lake Ontario also has a beach, but may not be particularly clean in the summer. Or rent bikes and go down the Niagara Parks recreational trail. The flower gardens around the Butterfly Conservatory is beautiful and the kids can run around. One other place for young ones is the Happy Rolph Bird Sanctuary (goats, rabbits, ducks, play equipment) on Read Road very close the lock 1 of the Welland Canal. Just 15 minutes from town.
