niagra falls week-end
Thinking of week-end trip to escape this 105 degree heat. Niagra Falls has always been on our bucket list and tought this could just be the right time to see it.
Hotels: I would like an upscale hotel with a fabulous view. Do not mind chains as long as they are newer and have good service. I think I read Embassy Suites was right on the falls. It would be fine if the views are wonderful. I have read several posts that say Niagra Falls is like a cheap Atlantic City. This concerns me. Please tell me if I am wrong but I am thinking if our hotel is wonderful and we are given great places to dine it should be okay. Am I right or wrong? I have never been to Atlantic City but we do frequent Las Vegas at least once or twice a year. We are not big gamblers but enjoy the food, shows and a few games of blackjack. We always stay on the strip at either the Bellagio or the Mandalay Bay. Any suggestions?

Well, I have not been in a while to Niagra falls but I would probably say it has many tacky spots here and there much like Vegas or Atlantic City. There is always Niagra on the lake not far from there and it has many nice places to stay and see. Lots of wineries, nice restaurants etc.

There are several hotels with Falls views but the interest in gambling should put you at the Fallsview Casino and resort... It is a first class hotel with Spa, Casino and entertainment... check ... the real tacky areas are several blocks away on Clifton Hill... also follow eagle3 advice and plan on visiting Niagara on the Lake for wineries and fine dining... have fun!

I agree with gary. I think you would enjoy a Fallsview room at the Fallsview Casino. We stay at the Embassy Suites, Fallsview room, and recommend it often. The Marriot is right next door so I know their Fallsview rooms would be the same good view. Visit Goat Island on the U.S. side and do Cave of the Winds there. You can do Maid of the Mist from either the U.S. or Canadian side. We love Niagara Falls and go every year for a couple of days. Take a day and drive to Niagara on the Lake taking the wine trail. You can pick up a brochure from your hotel that gives you the wine route. Have lunch in NOTL and do some shopping in this quaint little town.
Have fun!

It's Niagara, not Niagra!

If you go looking for Vegas in NF you won't find it. Neither will you find Bellagio or Mandalay Bay in NF. You may want to stay in NOTL (still not Bellagio or Mandalay Bay)& take a cab to NF for gambling.
But remember, NOTL is not the "quaint town" it once was. It is very crowded on a weekend afternoon/evening. The last time we were there (mid May) it reminded me of a movie set....not real...too cutesey. I couldn't wait to get out of there. And, we had one of the worst meals we have ever had anywhere @ The Prince of Wales Hotel.
Personally, I would not go to NF or NOTL for a weekend Getaway but there are many here who like it. So, I think this is just one of those things that if it on your "bucket list", as you say, go & do it & cross it off the list.
Would you fly to Buffalo? Where do you live? ( i.e, is it fairly easy for you to get to NF/NOTL?)

This is my best advice: take Niagara Falls for what it is and decide for yourself what you want out of it. Don't listen to the naysayers.

Go, watch the water pour over the edge, feel the spray on your face, experience the power of the Falls. Visit Table Rock, Prospect Point, Goat Island, Rainbow Bridge, etc. Give the Falls themselves a chance to imbue your soul with the spirit of the Falls.

After that, decide for yourself what's important. Clifton Hill is very much a carnival midway. Tacky? Sure. But that doesn't mean you aren't allowed to enjoy it. Do the activities: Maid of the Mist, Journey Behind the Falls, White Water Walk, Spanish Aero Car, Butterfly Conservatory, Whirlpool Jet Boats, Cave of the Winds, etc. Visit the historical sights in the area.

There's a wonderful juxtaposition between the natural splendour of the Falls and the manmade sparkle of Clifton Hill and the Casino. Enjoy them both for what they are and let them play off of each other. Go spend the weekend and enjoy it. Don't worry about the rest.

Naysayers? She asked for an opinion. I gave mine. She is looking for "an upscale hotel with a fabulous view". I think that's about as close as she wants to get to feeling the spray on her face! I would not describe anything in NF as "upscale". From Maggie101's OP, I did not get the impression that she was looking to "imbue her soul with the spirit of the Falls." She wants Vegas in Niagara Falls & she won't find it. That's all I said.

Hey Ocean... relax... have a beer.... we love you even with your limited knowledge of what Niagara has to offer... chill baby!!!

Thanks, Gary. I love you too! ;) But, you should know that my knowledge of Niagara is extensive. Niagara is Wine Country...not beer country, Gary! You must have Niagara confused with Kitchener.
Now.... I am heading out to explore the vineyards! Cheers!

The Angel Inn Pub offers a wonderful Amber called Angel Red that gives you a welcome break from a day long wine tour... Far from Kitchener and right in the heart of the Village... add a Shepherds Pie and you will be far away from cutsey.... also Escabesche at Prince of Wales is Fine French Cusine and requires a fan of that type of food...
