Niagara-on-the-lake/ Niagra Falls

Hello everyone! I hope you can help please.... we are a couple in our late 20s from northern ireland and this sumemr are flying to NYC tfor few days then driving up to and staying in Dennis, Cape Cod for 5 days then taking a looong drive from Cape Cod to New Philadelphia, OH.

We hope to drive through NH and VT then on into NY state and into OH that way and thought- we should try do Niagra Falls too!

We would likely be arriving at Niagara falls in the evening- so would get to see the falls at night. Then we would stay the night and maybe see the falls again next morning/ do Maid of the Mist then head on our journey to Ohio. Must Maid of the Mist be booked well in advance?

My questions are- where would you recommend staying since we are arriving in the evening etc? would you suggest Niagra itself?

Years ago we went to Naigra-on-the-lake for a day and loved it....but would you suggest staying there the night or simply stop by there the next day? Is it a big detour?

Can i stress that we are on a VERY tight budget- so really connot afford a fancy B&B or hotel but obviously would like somewhere nice in an around the $150 dollar mark for one night?

Suggestions please would eb very much appreciated? Many thanks, Sarah

If you are arriving late and just need simple lodging, consider a chain on the US side... there is a Days Inn, Crowne Plaza, and Holiday Inn close to the Falls...They are much cheaper than the Canadian lodging...

... once you decide on your room, you could Walk across the US/Canada Rainbow Bridge to the Canadian side and see the lighted Falls from Canada (you must have the proper passports and paperwork with you)... the bridge walk has an amazing view of the Falls and a great photo opportunity...

... the Following day, consider Cave of the Winds on the US side and the Maid of the Mist... both are walk ups and easy to get on... then jump in your car after check out and drive across the Rainbow Bridge and ride along the Niagara Parkway to Niagara on the Lake... its a nice 20 minute ride along the Niagara gorge ending in Niagara on the Lake... you will pass several wineries and feel free to stop and sample our famous Icewine...

...following your visit, consider riding the Niagara Parkway all the way back to Buffalo's Peace Bridge for reentry to the US and your trip to Ohio... have fun planning.

PS... if you miss home, stop in the Harp Irish Pub in Niagara on the lake for lunch...

Look up Michael's inn - it is right at the Falls - you can see it from the rooms - and is reasonably priced. It has free parking and large rooms.

Hey sazcc,

On the Maid of the Mist, if you can arrange it so that you're near first on the boat, try to get yourself upstairs in front of the wheelhouse for the best view

Just a follow-up, you didn't say if history is a touchstone for you but if it is, there's also Brock's Monument at Queenston Heights, about halfway between Niagara Falls and Niagara on the Lake. You can climb the stairs to the top for a few bucks and have a great view over the surrounding area. Not for the claustrophobic, though.

HTH
u

p.s. It's the second Brock's Monument. The first one got blowed up REEALLLL good.
