Niagara in winter
 

Deep-freeze temperatures in Southern Ontario are presenting a face of Niagara Falls that most tourists miss. Ice is coating the shores on both American and Canadian sides. The falls themselves keep pouring, but the mists can freeze like a giant wedding cake. In the past those mists might create something like a bridge across the gorge, or so old photos show. This pretty spectacle carries its own drawback: The mist can freeze on the tourists clinging to the sidewalks too.

The "Ice Bridge" was created by the collection of ice floes that went over the Falls and collected at the base of the Falls. .. in the early 1900's vendors would set up booths on the ice and people would walk across to Canada... the practice was stopped when tourists began to challenge the ice and a handful were killed...

Today the ice is held back upriver at the mouth of Lake Erie by the "Ice Boom"...
