Niagara Falls/On-the-Lake

Although the Falls are lovely, I thought the town was a little tacky. I'm now going back with two eleven year olds. After we do Maid-of-the-Mist & the elevator; is there anything else to do? I'm thinking we need to just go for a short evening trip (by bus from Toronto). I hate to waste a whole day of the 3 day July 1st week-end in Toronto! Anyone disagree? I've never been to Niagara on the Lake. I have visited that website, looks ok, but not worth giving up time in Toronto.

There's a butterfly conservatory in Niagara which is supposed to be impressive. I haven't been there myself, but I've heard good things about it.

Hi, Cindy! Just to let you know,
it takes about 1.5 hours to go from
Toronto to Niagara Falls by bus. Expect
LOTS of traffic on the July 1st weekend.
So, it may take even longer.
As for NOTL, it has lost much of its
historical charm that once (say, up until about 6 years ago) made it a wonderful place to visit. In addition,I think you wld. be hard-pressed to find much of interest in NOTL for 2 eleven year olds. Our 12 year old wld. much rather spend a weekend in Toronto than 'waste' a day, as you say, going all the way out to NOTL. Again, allow at least 1.5 hours travelling time each way.
Have a great weekend whatever you decide to do!

Thanks for the Butterfly conservatory info Susan. We have a nice one in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Paula, thanks for the information, especially regarding the l.5 hr trip or longer, that helps in making a decision. I'll think it over this week-end. Have a great week-end, I may come up with some more questions on Monday! From Cindy

Cindy: I have been to the butterfly conservatory, and highly recommend it, particularly with two ll year olds. They might get a little bored with Niagara-on-the-Lake. How's about Marineland, just over the border on the Canadian side? Trained whale and dolphin shows - amusement rides etc. They should enjoy it.

Marie, thanks for the info about Marineland. I will do some more research.

Did you do the "Natural" attractions
1. Journey behind the falls
2. Great Gorge adventure
3. Spanish AeroCar
4. Butterfly Conservatory
5. Rent bikes and go for a bike ride up or down the Nigara parkway

or even Ride Niagara?

As for NOTL (they shorten it up there), if the kids like history, try Fort George, or if they still have them the "Ghost Tours" They're fun as NOTL is reputed to be in most haunted in north america or the jetboat ride but 11 may be a bit young
