My recent experiences with Howard Johnson's in Canada cause me tosuggest you stay away from its establishments.

I've never been disappointed at any Comfort Inn I've ever stayed at (and there have been dozens)

About St. Catharines (which has an "a" in it if you are doing web searches)

With all due respect to this town, it ain't a tourist haven, regardless of what might appear on a map. For a good time, you're bettr off actually in Niagara Falls, or in Niagara on the lake, which is about a half hour away. St. Catharines is an industrial city without much to do, otehr than go to Niagara Falls, Niagara on the lake, etc.

BAK

If you have a car and are not adverse to paying a little more, Niagara-on-the-Lake would be a more interesting place to stay. It is only a 20 minute drive to the Falls. I would suggest an Inn or a B&B. Eating opportunities are better in the Falls though.

If you'll have a car, check out the South Landing Inn in Queenston, which is about midway between the Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake. Here, you'll get comfortable country inn rooms at chain motel prices.

Or, you can go to www.niagaraonthelake.com and fill out a form, whereupon you'll receive recommendations for the perfect accomodations (based upon your preferences), very reasonably priced. Much more charming and comfortable than the low-priced chain motels.

Another idea would be to book something you can cancel, then check for specials at www.niagarafallslive.com a week or two before your arrival dates. There are often amazing bargains here (Fallsview rooms with jacuzzis at the "better" chains - Hilton, Marriott, Sheraton) for the same rate or less than the others. Or, even if they're a bit more, well worth the difference!

Because of the construction going on just below all the Fallsview Boulevard hotels (the new casino and hotel), there are also bargain rates at the Hilton and Renaissance and so forth. For sure, your "fallsview" room will overlook the construction site, but you'll also have magnificent views of all the falls from a really nice room.

Just stayed at the Renaisance on Fallsview, it's a lovely hotel but djkbooks is right about the construction, the area's a mess. Nothing in St. Catharines to see. Try Niagara on the Lake-the route along the river between NOTL and Niagara Falls is lovely. Don't miss the wineries if you're into that.

We stayed in Howard Johnson (St. Catherines) four years ago and were more than satisfied.
