Niagara Falls healthy, somewhat budget conscious dining
 

Hi! We are visiting Niagara Falls area for 2-3 days in July, primarily to catch up with family living in Canada. 1) I'd like to know from some locals of places to eat that serve tasty, healthy type foods at a decent price; 2) Would also be interested in recommendations for a steak meal; 3) Would AG's be a good choice if hubby & I decided to do one nice dinner (we are staying at the Sterling Inn);
4) We may do a day trip to Niagara on the Lake; is there a good place to pick up lunch for a picnic? I've read about some place that has good lunch fare & also about a lot of roadside produce type stands. Do they also sell sandwiches, etc.?

The "official" road side fruit stands just sell fruits and vegetables.

Starbucks sells good sandwiches -- expensive but packed with good food.

Tim Hortons sells godd sandwiches you can take out fo the restaurant and eat in a park.

Most large supermarkets now have very good takeout counters, with sandwiches but also with salads and other tasty, healthy, food.

If you spot a Fortino's, (giant supermarket) go get a pizza.

Right outside of Niagara on the Lake is a market with fresh sandwiches, soups, salads that you can buy and take outside to eat. There is a park across the street but the day we were there it was just too hot to eat outside so we just looked around and drove on into Niagara on the Lake and ate there. Actually, we ate at the golf course club which is opened to the public and wonderful outside patio seating which was not hot because it's by the water and had a cool breeze. They cook hamburgers and hot dogs out there on the patio. We really enjoyed it.

The Epicurian in the village of NOTL is health oriented soups, sandwiches, and goodies... high quality and decent prices... there is a wonderful lakeside park in the village...

For steak, consider the Keg in Embassy Suites... excellent view, good food

For a "nice" dinner that also features local fresh fare, consider On the Twenty, Peller, Hildebrand, Strewn, Penninsula Ridge, and Vineland... all are excellent!

I agree with Gary on the steak. The Keg with fallsview is where I would go. Ask for a window seat and wait if necessary.

We did have lunch (& free samples!) at Kurtz Orchards on our way to the Whirlpool Jet Boat Tour at NOTL. We also decided on AG at the Sterling Inn for dinner & it was very good. I had made a ressie for the Keg, but changed to AG since we had lunch at the Skylon Tower with the fallsview (pricey & not very good!). We also had dinner at the Spicey Olive Bar & Grill which was moderately priced - good salads, Mediterranean Pasta w/ chicken & pizza.

Yes, we really did have a great time! That hot South Carolina weather followed us first to San Francisco & now to Canada :-)! We met my husband's brother & family there & it was really fun catching up. My sister-in-law got pretty sun-burned with just an hour on the river, so don't neglect your sunscreen! The Sterling Inn & Spa was very nice & just couple of blocks away from the hectic part of NF, so very quiet. Although it is geared for couples, there are 2 rooms that have 2 queen beds for families/friends traveling, so my husband's family was able to stay there too which was very convenient (I'd really wanted to try this hotel because we like staying in boutique hotels/inns if we have a choice; I'd really wanted to try the Harbour House or Shaw Club in NOTL, but maybe on a future visit!).

We were in NF a couple of weeks ago with two teens..had lunch at Falls Manor Restaurant..clean, busy and inexpensive. Lots of choices. Would recommend it.
