Victoria Ballet?
Anyone know how the Victoria Ballet is? We'll be in Victoria just after Christmas and I see they will be performing Cinderella. Also, the Canada Pacific Ballet is doing a winter gala, but I can't find anything about it on-line. We'll have to do one or the other or neither. Any thoughts?

I recently saw the Ballet Victoria production of Firebird at the Mc Pherson Playhouse, and it was wonderful. Ballet Victoria has come under fire recently for the price of the tickets, and for not making the "Family- Friendly" shows like The Nutcracker a priority in their seasonal repetoire. I have to say, as a fan of contemporary ballet, that their omission of that ballet is a good thing.
if you're looking for innovative, evocative and stunning performances, oftentimes its the smaller companies like Ballet Victoria that make the experience truly memorable.
We were seated in mid section, with a decent view of the stage. The lighting and staging really highlighted the dynamic choreography of the piece, and you could tell that they made an effort to move the show across the stage so everyone in the theatre got an opportunity to see the action.
As far as I could tell (I am by no means an expert), the calibre of dancing was also high, as I have seen the Royal Winnepeg Ballet, The San Francisco Ballet and the Alberta Ballet; the dancing was beautiful and the orchestra was also top-notch.
I hope you get the chance to see the production of Cinderella!

Thanks for the info re the ballet. The production of Cinderella sounds innovative, from the web. Do you know anything about the Winter Gala? Last year, the CPB brought in an opera singer and some Gilbert and Sullivan players. I can't find what their show is this year.

Hello Orcas, unfortunately, I could not find any info about this year's winter Gala, either. Hopefully it will be on, because from reviews of past galas, they are spectacular.
This was all I could find:
