Newfoundland tent camping

Hello all. Purchased a coleman 6 person tent for myself and 4 kids to go caming in NFLD. We have never camped before, but are planning a massive trip and accommodation s in NFLD are a lot! We travel by day..never the same place twice. Please tell me what is essential to take in van besides tent. Which are best places to set up a tent? We are arriving in Port aux basques , driving to Red Bay, then change/fogo isles , down to Fortune, a night in France for fun, and back to Port aux basques ferry...7 or 8 days total..Thanks

May I suggest you also post on the Trip Advisor Newfoundland forum - a bit more activity over there.

i am going to assume this is a serious post (although i'm leary). i'll just throw out a few thoughts and see if you come back with anything else. camping is a fabulous way to travel and can be incredible experiences / memories for families. however, if you are not prepared, it can be miserable. some quick tips for you to consider...a 6 person tent is usually big enough to sleep 3-4 people comfortably with their "stuff". you need to invest in: some sort of mattresses, blankets / pillows /sleeping bags, tarps/rope (in case it rains and do you know how to set them up); axe (can you chop wood); cooking supplies; chairs to sit on around the fire; flashlights; containers for water; coolers; and on and on. are your kids old enough that if they wake up during the night, they'll go to the bathroom, through the dark alone or will you be up all night caring for them. setting up a comfortable campsite takes time and i would not recommend changing every night.

Yes..it is a serious post. We are sleeping only in the tent...we are not "camping"per se. We spend our days in the car....tenting is just a place to sleep. Kids are old enough that they do not go to potty at night. We have air mattresses with built in pumps, sleeping bags, flashlights, a cooler , a dining tent, we can buy water. We plan on staying at campsites...not in the middle of nowhere. We have a tarp. Chairs are a good idea. We used to just sit on logs.

Here's a listing from the official NL website. The whole website is a valuable resource for planning your trip.
