Newfoundland, off the beaten track

Newfoundland, off the beaten track

I am in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. I'm spending 14-20 days roaming around the island. My trip will take me through Gros Morne, up to St. Stephen, and through towns (i.e. Gander, Clarenville, Glovertown, and the ST. John's area).

I am searching for specific destinations (known or unknown). I know about Terra Nova, Lanse aux Meadows ,and I've heard about Twiningate and Trinit. Please share your favourite Newfoundland spots in the month of AUgust according to the following interest criteria. Thanks.

-the nicest thing to do?
-memorable/dramatic scenary & landscape photography (i.e. viewpoints, panoramas, sunsets)
-nature, the outdoors, hikes/hilltops, and amazing views...
-lovely/charming streets
-architecture
-non-typical/exciting/interesting/unique EXPERIENCES (full of original character), and local only to the area.
-specialty/unique local cuisine

I sugggest you go to Quirpon Island. It is a wonderful place for nature and hiking. I don't know if it can be visited for a day trip, because I stayed there overnight. But check it out:

I can offer two way off the beaten track suggestions that may be of interest and they could not be further apart and still on the island portion of Newfoundland/ Labrador!(I will assume you have already researched their fabulous tourism website...)

We loved Cape St. Mary's: it is a days trip out of St. John's IF you start very early...to truly enjoy it though, stay somewhere in the area overnight and hike into the amazing bird sanctuary and make a full day of it.

Then as long as you're going to be in Corner Brook (where we lived for a year), check out Captain Cook's Gallery (a restaurant) as your end destination on Route 450 out to Lark's Harbour. The drive is wonderful and you will see Frenchman's Cove and Blow me Down Park on the way to the freshest fish and chips ever.

I am a passionate 'foodie' and if you are, too, I would be happy to share more specific info.

we visited Newfoundland last summer(mainly the East side) and enjoyed it very much especially the Whale watching and Icebergs in Twillingate and the many scenic places like Eastport...it was well worth the time...will do it again soon.
