Newfoundland: 'Lately' by Joy Norman
Jerry,
thank you for pointing out the CD. Tried to contact the production studio but the e-mail address does not seem to be current. Hope to have an opportunity to hear Joy's songs in person. |
Yes, the email is no longer active.
Please send me an email at [email protected] and we can go from there. thanks Jerry |
Hi Jerry,
Are you acquainted with the album entitled 'Atlantic Heart'? It also includes ‘Let me fish off Cape St. Mary’s’ by Joy Norman. Or, would you have any other recommendations? |
Hi,
Try the 'Homebrew' series. You can easily get these when you get to Newfoundland. Annual compilations of local music. Atlantic Heart features female singers from the four Canadian Atlantic provinces. To get the Homebrew series via the internet try either Tidespoint Music or the Downhomer Shoppe on line. cheers Jerry |
Hi, hi, and thank you. I want very much the music to be integrated into this trip. As well as learning about the traditions and hear the legends.
Now, I wonder how is the life like in Ramea Islands? It is silly, I know. Can't absorb it all. |
Puffinx, what a great idea to want to integrate the local music into your trip. I'm sure it will add to your enjoyment in a big way.
I'm not familiar with Joy Norman. I do like Bruce Guthrie , I think he is from the east coast, but I'm not so sure he sings folk songs. A long time Canadian treasure is Stompin' Tom Connors . He sings Canadian songs his way. He's very unique and might take some getting used to, but I love him. He even sings about picking Tobacco in Tillsonburg a tobacco town in Ontario. Anyway , give him shot. I'm not familiar with Ramea Islands. Can anyone help me out here. You are not silly at all I think it's wonderful that you want to absorb as much as possible and seem to have George and Jerry, the experts to help answer your questions. I'm waiting for another question that I can help with. |
Hello again puffinx:
Kodi was kind enough to refer to me as an "expert". Far from it! Just someone who loves Newfoundland and her people. Ramea and the other islands on the southern shore is one area we haven't yet visited. We hope one day to devote a vacation to taking the ferry from Burgeo and stopping at Ramea, Grey River, Francois, McCallum and Gaultois. The ferry schedule is somewhat complicated and requires a number of days for such a trip. I couldn't find a site with photos of Ramea but Francois has a website, www.francoisnf.com, that has photos & community information. Jerry mentioned the "Downhome Shop" (they recently changed the name from "Downhomer"). They have a huge shop of Newfoundland books, music, crafts, products, etc. at 303 Water Street, St.John's. Well worth a visit. They also publish "Downhome" magazine each month. Look for a copy available thruout the Province. I've been a subscriber for over seven years. Regards. |
George Hi!
Francois is amazing: what a beautiful setting. 'Painting' perfect. It seems one would have to leave the car in Burgeo or, Ramea to hop the islands. Yes, it seems this trip would require advance planning. I was able to Google some images of Ramea Islands. Click on Images and then type in quotes “Ramea Island”or such. Thank you for the Downhome Shop address. |
Jerry,
just a few more words on the new CD by Joy Norman. It is entitled 'Field of Diamonds' and it was released just a few days ago. I enjoy listening to Joy very much. She has a very beautiful voice. Thank you for introducing us to her. |
