Newfoundland Itinerary help

We are planning a trip to Newfoundland. Fly into Deer Lake on May 22 and out of St. John's June 3. I know it is early in the season, but we really want to see icebergs. My itinerary so far.

May 22 arrive
May 23 Western Brook Pond boat tour
May 24 Bonne Bay tour and or tablelands
May 25 drive to St. Anthony
May 26 iceberg tour
May 27 back to Rocky Harbor
May 28, 29 Twillingate.
this is where I need help, should we head to St. John's and what are the must see there. Are there other must see on the east coast?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't think you'll have any trouble seeing icebergs - very early this season - but they may not yet have arrived at St. Anthony - keep your eyes on this website and twitter.

Are you planning to visit L'Anse aux Meadows near St. Anthony as well?

We loved the Trinity/Bonavista area (closer to St. John's)....but you might want to add a night in Twillingate as two nights is really only one day (go to Trinity area instead - lots of bergs there now)and then have 3 nights in/near St. John's. We stayed in Witless Bay which is less than a 30 minute drive to downtown St. John's.

You might get lucky near St. John's if the whales are a bit early - see this chart

Have fun!

Not sure what your interests are, so it is hard to give specific advice. However on the dates that you are in the Rocky Harbour area, the Trails, Tails, & Tunes Festival will be going on. There will be lots of music in Norris Point, plus guided hikes at various locations in the park. If you google the festival, you will be able to see the 2016 schedule.

Thanks for the help, We are planning on visiting L'Anse Aux Meadows, but it doesn't open until June 1. Does this mean there is an interpretive centre that doesn't open? Will we be able to see anything there? We are both in our 60's but active and would like to do some moderate hiking.
Question for Elisabeth S. Are you recommending Trinity/Bonavista over Twillingate?

A few comments:

There are two viking tourist sites in L'Anse Aux Meadows - the Parks Canada site where the archeological ruins were found (and recreated with actors/interpretors) and a private site about 2 km away (Norstead) with a recreation of a Viking ship and interpretive displays (with actors as well).

The Parks Canada site opens May 30 it appears but I can't find an opening date for Norstead.

We enjoyed both very much but the more important one is the parks Canada site - if it's not open when you're there I don't think it's necessary to drive all the way to St. Anthony to see icebergs. In fact looking at the iceberg finder link I mentioned above there aren't any icebergs there yet. When we were there in mid June they commented that the icebergs were "really early" - so I think you might be best to look for icebergs either in Trinity or Twillingate area and consider skipping the drive up and back from St. Anthony (which isn't the prettiest town in Newfoundland).

I wasn't entirely clear - I'd go to either Twillingate or Trinity but add at least a night .... so 3 nights in one of them. (assuming you want some time in/near St. John's).

For us the Trinity area had it all - bergs, puffins and whales with some lovely scenery and delicious food. We didn't go to Twillingate - spent 3 nights on Fogo. That might be a consideration for you as well (although it's a little more complicated coordinating the ferry schedule but early in the season it's easy).
