Newfoundland in June
HI
We're a family of four (M58, F56, M25, F17) going to St John's Newfoundland from June 25-29. Flight, hotel and car are booked. As is a screeching ceremony on our arrival day and O'Brien's boat tour on our first official full day. Trying to put together the rest of our itinerary but need help knowing how long certain things take to do so I can piece everything together. Hoping to see the following: -Terry Fox Memorial (maybe first day as we land at noon and the screeching isn't until 5pm) -Cape Spear (is this an all day or half day?) -jelly bean row -The Rooms (thinking to keep this for last, to do should the weather be bad since it's indoors) -Signal Hill (is this an all day or half day?) -walking tour (does it need to be done with a tour guide or can we do it on our own) -watching the sunrise -Johnson Geo Center If anyone can help with regards to time spent and what best to see and when, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you |
Perkie,
We visited NF in August 2018 for 3 weeks traveling around NF. Definitely bring rain gear and layers. It was in the 60’s when we visited and it rained. Here are the locations we visited while in St. John’s. Signal Hill Cape Spear Lighthouse Petty Harbor ( great fish and chips at Chafe’s Landing when 2 times that good) Pippy Park & Memorial University Botanical Garden Downtown area including Waterfront Railway Coastal Museum Anglican Cathedral The Rooms (history museum) Fort Amherst (Lighthouse and Fort) Johnson Geo Center (great Titanic Exhibit) Hope this helps. HI
Thank you for the information. We only have 3 days (plus half day on the day we land) to play around with, so we have to figure out how many of these we can do in those three days. For example, I figured Cape Spear and Signal Hill would not be able to be done on the same day so we have to figure out what can be complemented with each. |
Hello!
A few thoughts to help figure out what fits well together/ what’s possible in a day: 1- Is your hotel in the downtown area of St. John’s? If yes and depending on the location, walking to the Terry Fox memorial might not need more than an hour. 2- Do you plan on driving up to Signal hill and seeing what’s on top of the hill/the view or do you plan on walking from your hotel, through the Battery and up the North Head trail? If visiting by car you easily could visit Signal Hill plus Cape Spear in a day. If hiking is your goal, perhaps you’ll want to do Signal Hill one day (I love to combine the North Head trail and then continue on to Quidi Vidi via the Ladies Lookout trail) and Cape Spear the next day (where there are also trails and a small museum). https://parks.canada.ca/lhn-nhs/nl/s...iv/ran-hik/nht https://parks.canada.ca/lhn-nhs/nl/s...ladies-lookout 3- Although you could easily walk yourselves around the downtown area and do a “self-guided tour,” a walking tour would provide a chance to hear the history (I don’t have a recommendation- just an opinion)! 4- If you’re driving yourselves to O’Brian’s you could add on a visit to Petty Harbour (to see a small fishing villageand maybe the fish and chips truck would be open) and or the beach at Witless Bay or Ragged cove (to get a sense of the rocky beaches and have another perspective of the ocean). June is a great time to visit! If you’re lucky you may see icebergs still and lots of whale activity! |
I just saw that seeing the sunrise was a goal. Cape Spear is thr place for that I hear (if it isn’t foggy). I’ve not done it, since I’m not much of a morning person😂
Also, if driving to Signal Hill that fits well with the Geo Centre. |
Hi Perkie
I also took the O’Brien’s tour. Loved the puffins, murres, kittiwakes, whales, scenery and frankly the festive experience (there might be singing, clapping and cheer). Yes, Signal Hill is a half day, could be combined with something else. Such a lovely hike, from the heart of St. John’s; most scenic hike from an urban center I think I’ve ever done. Do go to Quidi Vidi too. The Rooms are a good idea for a rainy day, precisely what I did on my rainy day when visiting the Avalon peninsula! Best wishes Daniel |
Thanks everyone. Its all very helpful.
