New Year's Eve in Halifax

Strange as it sounds, I will in Halifax doing a sailing race on New Year's Day and am looking for someplace in town to ring in the new year. Any suggestions?

Hi Joan, Haven't lived in Hfx in a couple of years but there's usually a fair bit on for NYE. There is a big organized party at the World Trade Ctr, an outdoor party in parade square downtown and all on the bars (there are loads) have something going on. What's your scene? Pubby, Clubby, something else?

Lots of places in the downtown core but you may have to get there early. The best place is the Grand Parade Square which has live entertainment from about 9pm to 12:30 am, fireworks at midnight, etc. Dress warm!!

Thanks for the responses. Could you tell me more about the party at the World Trade Center? Although coming from NY, I don't know if I want to be anywhere around a building with that name.

I'm more the pubby rather than clubby girl. Also, any restaurant recommendations? Any price range and any type of food.

The World Trade Centre is small compared to NYC. It is only 8 floors with a large convention centre/rink. Their are several parties held in different price ranges. Your best bet is trying to get in places such as the Split Crow, Triangle, Lower Deck, etc. (all pubs within one block of each other). Not sure if they sell tickets or not but you will have to be there early to avoid the onslaught of pubbers. Most people will go up to Grand Parade square at midnight and simply just to hear the live music which is always good. For restaurants, you will definitely need a reservation but if only one or two people you might get in. I enjoy OPA (greek food), Bitter End, Nemo's or Sweet Basil, O'Carrolls. All are in and around the same area. There is also Chives on Barrington St.

Hope you enjoy New Years in our beautiful city!

Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed my stay in Halifax. It was more wonderful than I imagined, especially the very freindly locals!!! In fact, I liked it so much that I am very seriously looking into moving there this year.

Slow down, Joan....Yes, there is something about Halifax that can give you that warm fuzzy feeling....even in winter! But having felt what you are feeling & having acted upon it I just want to say spend some more time there b/f you turn your world upside down.

Any thoughts on attending Dalhousie University in Halifax?

Forgot to ask-how did you fly there? Does Air Canada have flights(bigger equipment from Toronto)?

Joan Jan 9th, 2003 08:59 AM

Going to.....I'll be back up again at the end of February. I'm not going to university, graduated from that way too many years ago. But am already exploring a few business opportunities. And, we didn't fly, we drove from 15 hours from NY. Can't wait til those ferries start running again.

I am the mother of a student at Dalhousie (actually Kings College). We just spent Christmas at her place in Halifax because she was so keen to share her adopted city. We also fell in love (we are Torontonians). House prices are good, the weather is not too bad and the economy on the rise. Restaurants, culture had much to offer. I think you should explore further, good luck!!!

To College Mom: Fly Air Canada direct, non-stop from PIA. (Large Jets) They have a seat sale on right now (I just booked Easter flights To-Hfx!)

And, to Joan Sailgirl: All the best in 2003! Sounds exciting. Let us know what you decide to do, ok?
