i'm going to be camping about 20 minutes north of the shediac area this summer. i plan on stopping at hopewell rocks on my drive up from saint john to shediac. however, i would like to return to see hopewell rocks at the opposite tide to what i previously saw it. how long a drive would i be looking at one way - shediac to hopewell rocks. thanks.

Two hhours one way, proababy, give or take.

You need to get out of Shediac, or wherever you are (Cocagne?) and then,if I understand this right, go into Moncton in order to cross the river. And then on to Hopewell.

Allowing for traffic and stopping for donuts and other stuff, and parking and unparking...

But, you could change your day's plan/ Go to the rocks in the morning and then spend some time in Fundy National Park, and come back to the rocks.

my plan right now was to leave saint john in the early morning, drive to fundy nat'l park for a few hours then hopewell rocks in the afternoon and then onto my campground. then, as mentioned, returning to the rocks at the opposite tide.
maybe i'll reconsider my plan.

Part of your thinking process should be to find some tide tables, so that you know when the tides are high and low at the rocks. Use that info as the controlling factor, determining when you leave Saint John. It may turn out that you should drive past Fundy Park, go to the rocks, backtrack to the park, return to the rocks...

Or go Fundy, Rocks, campground, and then come back the next day to see the rocks with the tide at the other position. That second day can involve some other Moncton attractions -- Magnetic Hill, the tidal bore, etc.

Agree with BAK, you definitely need to check the tide tables in order to plan your days properly. You definitely need to see the Rocks at both high and low tide...but there's only about 6 hours in between.

Back to your original question. It is only a little over an hour from where you'll be to the Rocks. Shediac to Hopewell Cape is about 45 minutes. Coming south from where you will be camping to Shediac, you won't have to go through Shediac in order to get to Moncton as you can get on the Highway to Moncton before Shediac.

Other suggestions...you plan on camping north of Shediac. Have you thought of camping in Fundy itself or near the Rocks (Ponderosa Pines campground is only about 1/2 km from the Rocks)? That way you'll have time to explore Fundy and see the Rocks at both high and low tides.
