New Brunswick or Halifax
We are thinking of using the Maxxim Vacations to either go to New Brunswick or Halifax. We like history, nature, the outdoors, antiques, and small and interesting villages, so which would you suggest. With this trip you get air fare, accomodations and rental car so we will be able to explore.

Sam;

I would pick Halifax. There is so much to see here compared to New Brunswick.

You get the history right in Halifax and not far away you get the small interesting villages, such as Peggy's Cove, Lunenburg, and if you are here for a few days you can go to Cape Breton.

What time of year would you be coming?

Hi there, I am from New Brunswick so I'm partial. NB has lots of history to offer and is very beautiful. Fredericton is the capital city and very historical. There is a historical settlement called Kings Landing about a half hour out of town, we have an art gallery, and you can take tours of the legislature. About an hour and a half away is St Andrews. This is a small resort town near the state of Maine. you can visit the block house, which is a small fort with canon's aimed at usa. There is also a historical Hotel called the Algonquin. It was built by CP Railways in the 1890's and is lovely place to stay. here too you can enjoy water sports such as fishing, kayaking, whale watching, etc.
If you are torn, Halifax is only a 4hour drive from Fredericton by car. We have a new 4 lane highway from Fredericton straight through. You could spend a few days in each.

We would be coming around the third week of June. Also, we would like to do as little driving as possible, so Wendy your idea might be a good suggestion. Especially since I am interested in Titanic information and also in seeing Peggy's Cove. Both areas sound very lovely so it's a tough choice.

Hi again;

June is the perfect time to come to Nova Scotia. The weather will be good but you are also beating the crowds of the summer.

Stay in Halifax for a couple of days. You can stay downtown and walk to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. There are also tours of the city that would be easier than driving yourself. Contact Atlantic Tours 800-565-7173.
You can park your car at every hotel.

Take your car to visit Peggy's Cove and Lunenburg. It is a good day trip. Peggy's Cove is less than an hour from Halifax. Continue along the Lighthouse route (Along the ocean) to Lunenburg. (Home of the Bluenose). Don't forget to have some fantastic Nova Scotia Seafood!!

Have fun!!

Another vote for Halifax..loved the area. Didn't care for N.B. but admittedly didn't spend a lot of time there.

Hi Sam,
I cannot speak for NB, as I have only been on a business trip. However I have been to Halifax twice as a tourist and it is wonderful. I agree with the tour as posted above, if you can possibly do it, ride the Bluenose, it is spectacular. Enjoy, Louise

New Brunswick is way more beautiful than Nova Scotia. sorry people, but they just get more hype than we do. I think if people keep mising the "picture province" it is because they are going for cheesy commercials that NS puts on. We have everything and more. And if your looking for a small intimate town, Halifax is not it. It is a large urban centre. I do love Halifax, not to get everyone wrong, but I go to Halifax to get to a large city, because NB does not have any.

I am originally from Cape Breton but lived in Halifax for 7 years before moving to Toronto. Halifax is wonderful. It is a city but with small town charm. Also, there are many of the small towns you speak of with a very short drive of downtown. That said, we discovered New Brunswick only last year and, depending on where you go, it is gorgeous. Before that, I only knew that horrificly boring highway that takes you from the Maine border to Nova Scotia. I think as long as your tour doesn't keep you in the cities of New Brunswick but lets you get out and really see what it has to offer, you could pick either tour and be happy with your choice!!!

I vote for Halifax as well. Last June I drove my wife and 2 yr. old from Boston through Maine to St. Andrews & Moncton, New Brunswick to Charlottetown PEI, then Halifax, taking the Cat ferry from Yarmouth,NS back to Bar Harbor Maine. A lot of driving in 1 week, but a great chance make unplanned stops along the way. The Atlantic time zone buys you another hour of evening daylight beyond the late sunsets of June. The New Brunswick and Nova Scotia coasts on the Bay of Fundy were well worth our detours exploring. We enjoyed St. Andrews for its quaint history, and Moncton for a feel of daily life in the Maritimes, but Halifax and the southern coast of Nova Scotia were the highlights of our trip.
